Quick turnaround for Stoupinator
Stoupinator will return on a week’s rest and stretch out in distance for the first time in more than a year in the $47,000 feature at Laurel Park on Wednesday. Although the 1 1/16-mile turf race has a $32,000 claiming option, the 10 fillies and mares are all entered under the third-level allowance condition.
The Laurel card also includes two first-level allowance races.
Stoupinator has made her last six starts in turf sprints, dating back to October 2013. Her last win, however, came going a mile on turf in the $100,000 Northbound Pride Oaks at Canterbury Park near Minneapolis in August 2013. A 4-year-old, Stoupinator is trained by Mac Robertson and owned by Joseph Novogratz, who lives in the Minneapolis area.
Stoupinator went 3 for 10 last year but is winless in four races in 2014. She finished fourth, beaten 3 1/2 lengths, at Laurel last Wednesday going 5 1/2 furlongs on grass while unable to gain much ground in the stretch. The winner of that race, Fascinate, has won 4 of her last 5 starts.
Three races back, Stoupinator finished second by three lengths to Quality Lass, who in her next start won the $200,000 Turf Amazon at Parx.
The added distance of this race should put her on or just off the pace.
Key contenders
Stoupinator (Last 3 Beyers: 77-79-81)
◗ Stoupinator has never raced with fewer than 16 days between starts.
DRF Formulator Fact: In the last three years, Robertson is 6 for 31 (19 percent) with horses running back in a week or less.
Gathering (Last 3 Beyers: 85-77-85)
◗ She was third, beaten a neck, last out in the George Rosenberger Memorial Stakes at Delaware Park. The Rosenberger was restricted to fillies and mares who had previously raced at the Delaware Park meet.
◗ The 85 Beyer she earned in the Rosenberger is the highest last-out figure in the field. The second-highest, an 83, was earned by Parting Kiss, who finished fourth in the Rosenberger, a length behind Gathering.
◗ Gathering, trained by Jonathan Sheppard, is coupled with Nashindy. Victor Carrasco is named on both horses.
Nashindy has started only twice this year, most recently in June at Presque Isle. Gathering appears to be the stronger half of the entry.
Parting Kiss (Last 3 Beyers: 83-84-85)
◗ May have the best speed in the field and is dangerous if she is not challenged early.
◗ In the Rosenberger, she was pressed by eventual 20-1 winner St. Complete during the early going.
◗ The Rosenberger was contested over yielding ground, and Parting Kiss may prefer the firm going that is likely Wednesday.
Bound (Last 3 Beyers: 67-77-67)
◗ She is 3 and will be facing older rivals here.
◗ In her last start, she finished second to Dame Dorothy in the $76,000 Malvern Rose Stakes for Pennsylvania-breds at Presque Isle. Dame Dorothy is undefeated in three career starts and is trained by Todd Pletcher.
