Question surrounds dead heat

DEL MAR, Calif. – Well Measured and Navy Hymn were ruled to have finished in a dead heat in race 8 on Sunday, but a win picture released by Del Mar following the race prompted trainer Peter Miller to question whether his horse, Well Measured, had won the race outright.
Miller on Monday said he and Well Measured’s owners – including Gary Barber and Michael Wellman – were going to file a complaint with the California Horse Racing Board.
“It appears very obvious that my horse is through the line, and there’s space between the other horse and the line,” Miller said.
The photo Miller saw is of lower quality than the high-resolution photo used by placing judges and stewards when evaluating a photo finish. Mike Marten, who handles public relations for the racing board, said he had scheduled a meeting with Well Measured’s connections to show them the high-resolution photo on Wednesday.
