ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Sunday’s $400,000 Breeders’ Stakes at Woodbine, the anchor leg of the Canadian Triple Crown going 1 1/2 miles on the grass, will feature a rematch between the protagonists in the Queen’s Plate. The top two Plate finishers, Safe Conduct and Riptide Rock, both skipped the second Triple Crown race, the Prince of Wales Stakes at Fort Erie, because it’s contested on dirt. Safe Conduct was a grass specialist who took to the Tapeta like a duck to water in the $1 million Plate. Trainer Phil Serpe said Irad Ortiz Jr. gave the New York-based colt a great ride from post 1. “Irad did a masterful job of getting him out of that slot and getting him where he needed him, without using a lot of horse,” Serpe said. “I think the first part of the race may have been the deciding factor on that horse winning.” With Ortiz unavailable, Emma-Jayne Wilson picks up the mount on morning-line favorite Safe Conduct. :: DRF Bets players get free Daily Racing Form Past Performances and up to 5% weekly cashback. In an unconventional Plate prep, Riptide Rock was coming off a six-furlong allowance victory heading into the 1 1/4-mile race, in which he was a fast-closing second, beaten a head. “With a little luck, he could have gotten there,” trainer Sid Attard said. “He got pinched back early and had to go nine wide. He ran huge. I was so proud of him.” Riptide Rock rallied for third in the Toronto Cup Stakes on Sept. 12. Attard felt the one-mile distance was too short for the gelding. “He was a little too far back, and you had to be close and inside that day,” Attard said. Trainer Kevin Attard entered the Prince of Wales top two finishers, Haddassah and Harlan Estate, along with the fourth-place finisher, H C Holiday. Haddassah was rank early in the Plate before fading to eighth. He rated kindly in the Wales and won by a half-length. “He’s maturing,” Attard said. “His exercise rider, Micah Husbands, has done a good job trying to get him to relax. With a little racing experience, and just him maturing from a mental standpoint, it’s started to come together. Going a mile and a half now, it’s a different race. He can’t be too keen in the early part of the race.” Haddassah finished third to future Woodbine Mile winner Town Cruise in a June 13 allowance on turf. Harlan Estate, who was a minor player in turf stakes in Southern California, had an excellent work at Fort Erie a week out from the Wales. “Harlan Estate really impressed me at Fort Erie when he breezed,” Kevin Attard recalled. “He worked really well over that strip and ran like he worked. It was a good stretch battle between the two horses. He has a lot of experience on turf, and he’s probably going to appreciate getting back to it. He’s pretty easy to ride in the early part of the race. I think he’s got a good chance.” H C Holiday, a son of Ami’s Holiday, was stalled in traffic on the far turn in the Wales before ending up 6 1/4 lengths in arrears. “I was a little disappointed in his race,” Kevin Attard admitted. “His sire won this race. He should move forward.” A dozen Canadian-bred 3-year-olds were entered in the 130th running of the Breeders’. Ontario Fashion: Amalfi Cost, Boardroom rematched Kevin Attard sends out Amalfi Coast against favored Boardroom in Sunday’s Grade 3, $150,000 Ontario Fashion, a six-furlong sprint for fillies and mares. Amalfi Coast won the Grade 2 Royal North in her penultimate start on turf and is coming off a troubled third behind runaway winner Boardroom in the Grade 3 Seaway on the Tapeta. Attard said Amalfi Coast had several valid excuses in the seven-furlong Seaway. “She was coming back in three weeks off that hard win,” Attard said. “Boardroom was geared to that race, with a nice little break in between spots. “That’s a tough filly, the leader of the division. It’s going to take a lot to beat her, but I’ve got more confidence in my horse this time because she’s had a little refreshening. She seems to run better with a little time between races. I think she’s ready to fire her best shot.” Boardroom had clear sailing on the far outside when taking the Seaway by 4 1/2 lengths with a 98 Beyer Speed Figure, her second graded stakes win in as many starts this year.
