Queen's Plate pedigree profile: Sir for Sure
Sir for Sure
Sligo Bay – Serena’s Rose, by My Way Only
Bred in Ontario by Norse Ridge Farms
Sir for Sure, two-length upset winner of the Plate Trial last Sunday at Woodbine, has plenty of connections, both via his equine relatives and his human connections, to Lexie Lou, winner of the 2014 Queen’s Plate and other major events.
Sir for Sure and Lexie Lou are both by Sligo Bay, who was bred for stallion success, being by the great Sadler’s Wells and from the female family of successful sires Devil’s Bag, Rahy, Saint Ballado, and Singspiel, as well as Canadian Horse of the Year Glorious Song. Sligo Bay was Group 1-placed in France and later a Grade 1 winner in California before retiring to stud for the Adena Springs operation.
Lexie Lou – trained by Mark Casse, who also conditions Sir for Sure – is the top earner to date for Sligo Bay, winning nine stakes and earning more than $1.7 million. She swept the Woodbine Oaks and Queen’s Plate before adding the Wonder Where Stakes, the final leg of the Canadian Triple Tiara. She was a graded stakes winner that season and finished second to California Chrome in the Grade 1 Hollywood Derby, locking down the 2014 Canadian Horse of the Year title, as well as the Sovereign titles for champion 3-year-old filly and grass mare. She repeated in the latter division in 2016, as she was a multiple graded stakes winner.
The pensioned Sligo Bay has had additional success in the Canadian classics, siring 2016 Woodbine Oaks winner Neshama, who also was third in the Bison City; 2008 Breeders’ Stakes runner-up Sligovitz; and 2014 Bison City third-place finisher Paladin Bay.
Serena’s Rose won twice from 15 starts, both times on Woodbine’s all-weather track. She is the dam of three winners from as many starters and now has two stakes winners to her credit, with Sir for Sure joining My Silencer. They are the only stakes winners under their first three dams.
