Queen's Plate pedigree profile: Rondure

Nicole Russo|Aug 05, 2022
Rondure wins Marine Stakes at Woodbine on July 2 2022
Michael Burns Rondure finished second by a head in the June 12 Queenston, then wheeled back to win the July 2 Marine by 5 1/2 lengths. He will come into the Queen's Plate off a seven-week break.

Rondure

Oxbow – Carat Weight, by Trajectory

Bred in Ontario by Borders Racing Stable Ltd.

Oxbow is an American classic winner, and had a major contender in the Triple Crown series last year. Now, he takes aim on the Canadian Triple Crown with Rondure, winner of the Grade 3 Marine Stakes at Woodbine.

Oxbow, by Queen’s Plate and Breeders’ Cup Classic winner, successful sire, and sire of sires Awesome Again, is from the female family of two-time Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Tiznow. He ran to his pedigree stamina by winning the 2013 Preakness Stakes by 1 3/4 lengths, and then finishing second in the Belmont Stakes.

Oxbow’s most accomplished runner is Hot Rod Charlie, who, after winning the 2021 Louisiana Derby, crossed the line third, beaten just a length, in the Kentucky Derby. He then was a hard-fought second to champion Essential Quality in the Belmont, beaten 1 1/4 lengths after setting a pressured pace, while finishing 11 1/4 lengths clear of the rest of the field.

Oxbow was also the sire of a player on this year’s Triple Crown trail in Happy Jack, who was 14th in the Kentucky Derby and eighth in the Preakness.

Rondure’s dam, Carat Weight, was a maiden special weight winner going six furlongs on the dirt at Fort Erie. She is the dam of two winners from as many starters, with Rondure joined by the Alberta-bred Carat’s Song, also a dirt-sprint maiden special winner.

Carat Weight is out of stakes-placed Simply Precious, making her a half-sister to stakes winner Bear’s Gem and stakes-placed Peggy O. This is the family of Canadian champion Van Lear Rose and multimillionaire Grade 2 winner Gunnevera.
