Queen's Plate pedigree analysis: Tiz a Slam

Joe Nevills|Jun 02, 2017
Tiz a Slam wins the Cup & Saucer Stakes
Michael Burns Tiz a Slam capped off his 2-year-old season by winning the Cup & Saucer Stakes at Woodbine.

Tiz a Slam

Tiznow-Flaming Rose, by Grand Slam

(Bred in Ontario by Chiefswood Stables Ltd.)

Tiz a Slam carries the banner as a homebred for the Krembil family’s Chiefswood Stables.

His female line’s connection with the Krembil operation reaches back to second dam Rose of Tara, an Irish-bred half-sister to Irish Derby winner Salsabil, Group 1 winner Marju, and Group 2 winner Sahm. Rose of Tara was imported to the U.S. and sold in foal to Danzig for $1.6 million at the 2000 Keeneland November breeding stock sale. Rose of Tara was offered again at the 2002 Keeneland November sale, this time in foal to Storm Cat, and sold to Chiefswood Stables for $1.95 million.

Queen's Plate: Tiz a Slam could be Attfield's record-breaker

Flaming Rose, by Grand Slam, was Rose of Tara’s third foal as a Chiefswood broodmare and won 2 of 7 starts while never racing at a distance shorter than a mile. Her most notable win was a turf allowance at Keeneland going 1 3/16 miles.

Flaming Rose is the dam of two winners from three foals to race, including Holy Flame, who finished second in the six-furlong Fanfreluche Stakes at Woodbine.

Tiz a Slam is a stakes winner at 1 1/16 miles.

Tiznow was named Horse of the Year in 2000, and his eight wins in 15 starts included two editions of the Breeders’ Cup Classic going 1 1/4 miles. He set a track record at Louisiana Downs for the same distance in the Grade 1 Super Derby.

Tiznow has sired 13 crops of racing age, with 618 winners and progeny earnings in excess of $74.9 million.

Among Tiznow’s most successful runners are Canadian champion Bear Now, U.S. champion Folklore, Dubai World Cup winner Well Armed, Breeders’ Cup Mile winner Tourist, Belmont Stakes winner Da’ Tara, and Grade 1 winners Colonel John, Tizway, Morning Line, Tiz Miz Sue, Gemologist, and Strong Mandate.
