ETOBICOKE, Ontario – The famed red and gold silks of Sam-Son Farm have been in the Queen’s Plate winner’s circle on five occasions, with its last Queen’s Plate win coming 12 years ago by Eye of the Leopard in 2009. Since then, Sam-Son has had a pair of runner-up finishes from 10 starters in the Queen’s Plate – Hotep in 2010 and Up With the Birds in 2013. Sam-Son Farm’s Queen’s Plate wins came with the colts Regal Intention in 1998, Scatter the Gold in 2000, and Eye of the Leopard, along with the fillies Dance Smartly in 1991 and Dancethruthedawn in 2001. Dance Smartly went on to become the 10th Canadian Triple Crown winner, and second filly to accomplish the feat, when she won the Prince of Wales and Breeders’ Stakes. :: Get Daily Racing Form Past Performances – the exclusive home of Beyer Speed Figures This year, three Sam-Son Farm homebreds might enter the starting gate for the $1 million Queen’s Plate on Aug. 22 at Woodbine. It could also be one of the final times a Sam-Son Farm horse runs in the Queen’s Plate following the farm’s announcement last October that it would disperse the stable over 12 to 18 months. Gail Cox trains a pair of Sam-Son Queen’s Plate possibles in Queenston Stakes winner Tio Magico and two-time winner Tidal Forces, who was most recently fifth in the Grade 3 Marine Stakes on July 11. Graham Motion trains Sam-Son Farm’s Dance Some Mo, who finished second to Harlan Estate in an allowance over 1 1/8-miles on the Woodbine Tapeta on July 16. Tio Magico is the most experienced of the Sam-Son Farm runners, with eight starts. Following a 2-year-old campaign that saw him win at 1 1/16 miles and finish second in the Coronation Futurity, he spent the winter with Cox at Payson Park training center in Indiantown, Fla., and made two starts at Gulfstream Park. He finished third in an allowance on the dirt March 11 and then was fifth in an allowance at a mile on the turf on April 11. With the Woodbine meet pushed back because of the pandemic, Cox sent Tio Magico to Belmont Park in May, and the son of Uncle Mo finished seventh on turf in an allowance race. At Woodbine this year, Tio Magico finished fifth under Luis Contreras in an allowance going 1 1/16 miles on Tapeta on June 19, won by his stablemate Tidal Forces. He bounced back nicely with a gate-to-wire victory in the Queenston Stakes over seven furlongs on July 11. Cox said being close to the lead early in the race appears to be where Tio Magico is most comfortable. “Running seven-eighths, Luis could just leave him alone,” Cox said, regarding the Queenston. “He does have some natural speed, and we’ll see how that works out.” Tidal Forces, meanwhile, didn’t debut until April, with a victory at 1 1/8 miles on turf at Gulfstream Park. Tidal Forces made it 2 for 2 in the June 19 allowance race, and then finished fifth in the Grade 3 Marine Stakes on July 11 at Woodbine. Tidal Forces inherited the early lead from his rail post in the Marine, and Cox said that’s not how he wants to run. “Usually, he comes out and settles a little bit,” Cox said. “He’d be close, but not on the lead. He didn’t look like he relaxed very much at all.” Cox said Tidal Forces would train up to the Queen’s Plate, and that the stretch-out in distance from the 1 1/16 miles of the Marine to the 1 1/4 miles of the Plate should suit the son of Malibu Moon just fine. “He wants to go farther,” Cox said. “He’s naturally like that. We wanted to make sure he had lots of time before the Plate.” :: Bet the races with confidence on DRF Bets. Dance Some Mo has been based with Motion at the Fair Hill Training Center in Maryland, and like Tidal Forces, seems to be a horse that enjoys added ground. He won a maiden race on May 13 at Churchill Downs going 1 1/8 miles on turf in his third start and was second in an allowance race on Tapeta on July 16 at Woodbine over the same distance. In between, he ran seventh in a 1 1/4-mile turf allowance at Belmont Park in June. Cox, who has never started a horse in the Queen’s Plate, said Tidal Forces is on track for the Plate, but Tio Magico’s status is less certain. “It’s exciting to have a horse that you think is going to be competitive in there,” she said.
