Queen's Plate 2019 pedigree profile: One Bad Boy

One Bad Boy
Twirling Candy – Cumulonimble, by Stormy Atlantic
Bred in Ontario by Ron Clarkson ($65,000 Keeneland September yearling purchase by Say Jay Racing)
The Canadian Triple Crown is a unique challenge in that it requires races on a variety of surfaces. One Bad Boy, a candidate for this year’s series, is by a stallion and out of a mare who both ran well on three different types of surfaces throughout their careers.
Twirling Candy, by the stamina influence Candy Ride, won the Grade 2 Del Mar Derby and the Oceanside Stakes on turf, and later got on the dirt to win both the Grade 1 Malibu and Grade 2 Strub stakes. He won the Grade 2 Californian Stakes on a synthetic track and was also multiple Grade 1-placed on those surfaces, beaten a neck by First Dude and Game On Dude in the Hollywood Gold Cup and a head by Acclamation in the Pacific Classic.
As a stallion, Twirling Candy has put together a similarly versatile résumé. His best runners include Grade 1 winner Gift Box, making a name for himself in top dirt route events; Grade 1-winning sprinter Finley’sluckycharm; and Concrete Rose and Morticia, both graded stakes winners on the turf.
Illinois-bred Cumulonimble, by the solid turf and synthetic sire Stormy Atlantic, won two editions of the Lincoln Heritage Handicap on the turf at Arlington Park. She also was stakes-placed against statebreds on the dirt at Hawthorne and was a multiple stakes-placed winner on Arlington’s synthetic main track.
Cumulonimble already is the dam of Ms Bad Behavior, a stakes performer who has done her best work on turf. Ms Bad Behavior did win her maiden on the dirt, but she won last year’s China Doll Stakes on turf and has placed in eight other stakes on grass, five of them graded.
This is the extended family of 1993 Santa Anita Derby winner Personal Hope.
