Queen Elizabeth one of four Group 1 stakes at Royal Randwick
International runners will dominate the betting in Saturday’s Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes at 1 1/4 miles at Royal Randwick Racecourse in Sydney, Australia, but a local filly should be a danger.
Danon Premium, a five-time stakes winner in Japan, and Addeybb, a three-time stakes winner in England, were the leading choices in future-book betting Wednesday.
Of the pair, Addeybb may have a slight advantage. Trained by William Haggas, Addeybb won the Group 1 Ranvet Stakes at 1 1/4 miles at Rosehill Gardens in his Australian debut March 21. Danon Premium has not raced since a second as the 7-5 favorite in the Grade 1 Mile Championship at Kyoto Racecourse in November.
The $1.24 million Queen Elizabeth Stakes is the third of four consecutive Group 1 stakes on the 10-race Randwick program, which begins at 9:35 p.m. Eastern on Friday, or 6:35 p.m. Pacific. Nine of the 10 races are listed or group stakes. The other race is a $249,200 restricted stakes.

The Queen Elizabeth Stakes drew a strong field of 13. Te Akua Shark and Verry Elleegant are two of the top Australian-based horses. They were first and second in the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes at a mile on Feb. 29 at Randwick and have had mixed results since that race.
Te Akua Shark, a winner of 7 of 13 starts, was third as the 9-5 favorite in the Group 1 George Ryder Stakes at 7 1/2 furlongs on March 21 at Rosehill Gardens. Verry Elleegant, a 4-year-old Southern Hemisphere filly, cruised to an impressive victory in the Group 1 Tancred Stakes at 1 1/2 miles on March 28 at Rosehill Gardens.
Verry Elleegant has won 8 of 19 starts.
The first Group 1 of the program is the $311,500 Australian Oaks at 1 1/2 miles for 3-year-old Southern Hemisphere fillies. Colette, winner of her last three starts, will have her Group 1 debut, but must beat Shout the Bar and Probabeel, the first two finishers in the Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes on March 28 at Rosehill Gardens.
Young Rascal will be a heavy favorite in the $623,000 Sydney Cup at two miles. Trained by Haggas, Young Rascal won the Group 3 Manion Cup Stakes at 1 1/2 miles on March 21 at Rosehill Gardens in his Australian debut. Mustajeer, second to Verry Elleegant in the Tancred Stakes, merits respect.
Funstar is the lone 3-year-old filly in the $623,000 Legacy Stakes at a mile for fillies and mares, but was favored as of Wednesday. A winner of 5 of 8 starts, Funstar is part of a field of 17 along with Nettoyer, upset winner of the Group 1 Doncaster Mile last Saturday at Randwick.
