ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Quadruple closed with a rush to win the Grade 3, $175,850 Ontario Fashion going away under Ryan Munger on Saturday at Woodbine.
Spinelli set a fast pace on a clear lead in the six-furlong event for fillies and mares, while being chased by the heavily favored Creed’s Gold and Tessellate.
Quadruple ($34.30) rated kindly in midpack on the backstretch before looming into contention along the inside on the turn. She split rivals early in the stretch and went on to prevail by 2 3/4 lengths, in a time of 1:09.42.
Ultimate Authority beat out another double-digit longshot, Austere, for second. Sea Runner, Creed’s Gold, Sinclairity, Spinelli, Les Reys, and Tessellate completed the order of finish.
Quadruple had posted improving form since the spring and the Fashion was her first stakes victory, a breakout one at that.
“From the first time I sat on her to now, I have seen significant changes,” Munger said. “She’s really happy in herself. She deserved this black-type win today. The pace was on and she was relaxed, so I just cruised along and I had the right horses in front of me. I said if the gaps opened, she would blow by, and she did.”
A 5-year-old by elite sire Frankel, the Josie Carroll-trained Quadruple banked $105,000 for owner Mark Dodson.
“Mark purchased her in Europe and she came to me in Florida and started training down there before we headed up this way,” Carroll said. “She has a mind of her own, but she’s not too bad. We’ve been very excited about her from the beginning, and it took her a little while to get her bearings here. She just seems to be getting better and better.”
