Pyro works five furlongs at Keeneland

Marty McGee|Mar 24, 2008

Pyro, the early favorite for the April 12 Toyota Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland and arguably the leading candidate for the May 3 Kentucky Derby, worked five furlongs over Keeneland's main Polytrack surface in 1:02.40 on Monday in Lexington, Ky.

Trainer Steve Asmussen was on hand for the work, which he said "went excellent."

"It was exactly what we wanted to see and what we asked him for," Asmussen said. "He was very comfortable over the track and we hope that continues."

Regular exercise rider Dominic Terry was aboard for the work.

Pyro, owned by the Winchell Thoroughbreds, recently shipped to Kentucky from Fair Grounds, where he opened his 3-year-old season with impressive triumphs in the Risen Star Stakes and Louisiana Derby.
