ARCADIA, Calif. – First time out, take two. Fast-working 2-year-old filly Pushiness will be one of the most heavily favored runners Friday at Santa Anita if she makes it to the gate. Last month, she did not make it to the walking ring. Pushiness makes her career debut in the sixth race Friday, and expectations for the Michael McCarthy trainee will be as high as they were May 20, when she was favored to win the first race on the card. “She was already saddled up, and on her way out [of the saddling enclosure],” McCarthy recalled. As Pushiness was led up the incline to the walking ring, a distraction caught her eye and she froze. Pushiness was spooked by something, and veered into a wooden railing. “She went into it sideways, one of the crusty two-by-fours came sideways, hit her in the chest, and took the hide off,” McCarthy said. :: Get ready for Santa Anita racing with DRF Past Performances, Picks, and Clocker Reports.  Sounds dramatic, yet the abrasion on her chest was so minor it did not bleed. Nonetheless, veterinary protocol required the filly be scratched. “They called it an open-wound scratch,” McCarthy said. Coincidentally, the incident occurred two weeks after the filly’s owner was hit by a high-profile scratch. Mike Repole owns Pushiness and co-owns Forte, the Kentucky Derby favorite who was scratched the morning of the race. Forte gets a chance at redemption Saturday in the Belmont Stakes, and Pushiness gets another chance at a debut victory Friday at Santa Anita under jockey Juan Hernandez. The abrasion to the filly’s chest was no big deal, and she posted a half-mile bullet work five days later in 47.60. “She was fine,” McCarthy said, adding, “She’s fast.” Pushiness looks tough in race 6, a split of a maiden race for California-bred juvenile fillies. Her main rival is the improving Borntostaythirsty. In the earlier split, race 2, Keepyourpranceon drops into a statebred race for her second start. She faces debut filly It’s Saul Good. The maiden races are the meet’s first five-furlong races for juveniles. So far this season, favorites have dominated 2-year-old maiden races, winning five of the nine races at 4 1/2 furlongs. Three other maiden races were won by the second betting choice. :: Get Santa Anita Clocker Reports straight from the morning workouts at the track. Two starter allowance races include race 3, a turf sprint in which Natural Power seeks his second straight for a hot stable. Trainer Vladimir Cerin has won with six of his last 10 starters. Race 7 is a starter allowance turf sprint for fillies and mares in which McCarthy-trained Irish Patsy faces Miss Lizzy and Aventapp. Race 2 is the easier split of the 2-year-old maiden race. Keepyourpranceon finished seventh in her April 27 debut at Keeneland, but worked well since, including a half-mile in 48.20 on Monday at Santa Anita. Luis Mendez trains the filly, whose rider is Tiago Pereira. It’s Saul Good appears to have trained well for Jeff Bonde, who is 2 for 2 this meet with debut juveniles. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
