BENSALEM, Pa. – Like many turf courses in the Northeast, where rain has been scarce this summer, Parx's grass is quite firm and carrying speed farther than it would during a normal year. The Turf Amazon earlier on the Monday card at Parx was won on the lead by the quick filly Richies Sweetheart. And the two early leaders in the Grade 3, $300,000 Turf Monster Handicap – Pure Sensation and Mongolian Saturday – were both still around at the finish, too. Mongolian Saturday set the early pace in the five-furlong Turf Monster while being pressed by Pure Sensation from the outside. The two hooked up in earnest in the stretch, with neither horse giving ground. They hit the wire as a team, with Pure Sensation winning a head bob under jockey Kendrick Carmouche. Pure Sensation is 2 for 2 as a 4-year-old for trainer Christophe Clement. Following an eight-month layoff, Pure Sensation won a second-level optional-claiming turf sprint at Saratoga on July 31. He turned in a game effort in the Turf Monster and looks to be on the verge of a prosperous fall campaign. "I had a lot of horse, but he wasn't giving it to me," Carmouche said after the Turf Monster. "I kept switching, and he finally put his head down for me at the right time." Pure Sensation, a gelded son of Zensational bred and owned by Patricia Generazio, paid $6 as the favorite in the Turf Monster. He was timed in 55.81 seconds after Mongolian Saturday set splits of 21.30 and 44.07. Carmouche is coming off a successful Saratoga meeting, where he won 16 races. But he gave up the final day of the Saratoga meeting to ride at Parx on Monday. Carmouche has won five year-round riding titles at Parx (2008-11 and 2013), but he now is riding more in New York than at Parx. He was emotional in the winner's circle after the Turf Monster. "I never had any doubt," Carmouche said of being able to succeed in New York. "I understand the game. You have to want it, and I've always wanted it. But I love Philly Park. It made me. I love the people here." Sharp Sensation finished third in the Turf Monster, a neck ahead of Amelia's Wild Ride. Ben's Cat rallied to be fifth, another half-length back. Ben's Cat was trying hard in the stretch and was slowly gaining ground, but the way the course was playing Monday, that was a tough assignment.
