Heiligbrodt Racing Stable, trainer Steve Asmussen, and jockey Ken Tohill won their second straight 2-year-old stakes of the Zia Park meet on Sunday, when they teamed with Pulgarcito in the in the $55,000 Governor’s Cup. Pulgarcito's win came on the heels of their score with Fastation in last weekend’s $55,000 Permian Basin for 2-year-old fillies at the Hobbs, N.M. track. Pulgarcito ($4.20) tracked Jam’n Jackson early in the Governor’s Cup, following the leader through fractions of 22.38 seconds for the opening quarter and 44.51 for the half-mile. He overtook Jam’n Jackson and went on to a two-length win over the previously undefeated Race for Jake. Pulgarcito covered six furlongs in 1:10.84. It was his first win in a stakes after finishing fifth in the $50,000 Kip Deville at Remington Park on Oct. 8. Pulgarcito is a son of the Mr. Prospector stallion Greatness.
