ARCADIA, Calif. – Pubilius Syrus won the first stakes of his career in Friday’s $78,435 Eddie Logan Stakes for 2-year-olds at a mile on turf at Santa Anita, going past a stubborn favorite in Inscom in the final sixteenth. Pubilius Syrus ($5.80) ran a mile in 1:34.58 under jockey Kent Desormeaux, finishing a head in front of 6-5 Inscom. “Kent said he did what it took to win and he didn’t try harder,” said winning trainer Vladimir Cerin. Inscom and Pubilius Syrus were third and fourth with a quarter-mile remaining. Inscom took the lead in early stretch and was quickly challenged by Pubilius Syrus, who raced four wide. The two were separated by a head with a furlong to go and fought through the last furlong before Pubilius Syrus prevailed. “That horse wasn’t going to get by him,” Cerin said. Inscom finished 1 1/4 lengths clear of Choo Choo. “He ran his race,” trainer Simon Callaghan said of Inscom. Blended Citizen finished fourth, followed by Magic Musketier, Ayacara, Hardboot, and East Rand. Pubilius Syrus, a colt by Candy Ride, has won 2 of 6 starts and earned $112,140. Pubilius Syrus was fourth in his stakes debut in the Del Mar Juvenile Turf in September as a maiden, and beat Inscom by a nose in a maiden race at Santa Anita on Sept. 30. Pubilius Syrus was second in the Grade 3 Cecil B. DeMille Stakes at a mile on turf at Del Mar on Nov. 26, finishing 4 1/4 lengths behind Analyze It. Pubilius Syrus, who was purchased for $140,000 at the 2016 Keeneland September Yearling Sale, is owned by Holly and David Wilson.
