Proud Citizen enjoying early success

Lauren Stich|Dec 23, 2007
Hawthorne

Proud Citizen, who is off to a fast start at stud with his first crop, is the sire of Instill, who won the Jim Edgar Illinois Futurity on Dec. 15. Instill is out of the Sports View mare Eboney Oynx. Instill's third dam, Accommodate, is a half-sister to 1975 3-year-old champion Wajima, as well as multiple stakes winner and successful stallion Naskra.

Proud Citizen got another winner at Hollywood Park on Dec. 12 when Casino Kay, a 2-year-old filly out of the Holy Bull mare Celestial Crown, won a six-furlong $50,000 maiden claiming race at 13-1.

Aqueduct

Vaulcluse, a 2-year-old filly by A.P. Indy, won a mile and 70-yard allowance on Dec. 14 to remain undefeated in two starts. The Thomas Albertrani-trained filly is out of the Dehere mare Betty's Pet, a full sister to stakes winner Millions. Betty's Pet is also a half-sister to Star of Paris, who produced top European 2-year-old Elusive City, who finished first in the Group 1 Prix Morny. Vaulcluse's second dam, Liturgism, is a half-sister to multiple stakes winner Coup de Fusil, and this is the prodigious stakes-winning Tartan Farm female family of Arrangement.

* She may not want to go very far, but the precociously bred C.T. Phone Home looked smart winning a 5 1/2-furlong maiden race on Dec. 14. By speed influence Crafty C.T., the 2-year-old filly is out of a mare by another speed influence, Valid Appeal. C.T. Phone Home's dam, Hidden Desire, is a full sister to stakes winner Enjoy the Silence, and her second dam, Well Defined, is a full sister to Hutcheson Stakes winner Well Selected and stakes-placed Explosive Dancer. C.T. Phone Home's third dam, La Soufriere, was a multiple stakes winner and full sister to stakes winner Explosive Bid.

Calder

It's all about class in the dam. On Dec. 10, Malka, a 2-year-old filly by Deputy Minister, won a seven-furlong maiden race at 5-1 for Hall of Fame trainer Allen Jerkens. Malka is out of the stakes-winning Mr. Prospector mare Get Lucky, a full sister to 2-year-old champion and Travers Stakes winner Rhythm and leading Maryland-based sire Not for Love. In addition, Malka is a half-sister to stakes winners Accelerator and Daydreaming as well as the unraced She's a Winner, dam of Bluegrass Cat.

* Stage Dream, a 3-year-old filly by grass champion Theatrical, won a 1 1/16-mile maiden race on the turf as the 6-5 favorite on Dec. 13. Stage Dream is out of the Forty Niner mare Stylish Talent, who was third in the Oak Leaf Stakes. Stage Dream's second dam, Stylish Star, won the Del Mar Oaks.

* Golden Spikes, who won a 6 1/2-furlong allowance Dec. 13, is a 2-year-old to keep an eye on. By Seeking the Gold, he is closely related to Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies winner Cash Run (by Seeking the Gold). Golden Spikes is out of the A.P. Indy mare A.P. Interest, who is a half-sister to Cash Run and stakes winner and speed influence Forestry. Like Cash Run, Golden Spikes is an RF (Rasmussen Factor), as both are inbred to the superior broodmare Sequence. Sequence is the dam of Gold Digger, the stakes-winning dam of Mr. Prospector, and she is also the third dam of major stakes winner Shared Interest, the dam of Forestry, Cash Run, and A.P. Interest.

* Sensational Love won a six-furlong maiden race Dec. 14, and the 2-year-old filly is by Breeders' Cup Mile winner War Chant and out of the Lear Fan mare Love's Sensation. While she won by 2 3/4 lengths on dirt, Sensational Love is superbly bred to be best on grass. In addition to her War Chant-Lear Fan turf cross, she comes from the immediate female family that produced French Deputy, the winner of the Jerome Handicap who was sent to Japan before his foals started winning here.

* It seems that every week another Nick Zito-trained 2-year-old comes along with a victory that automatically puts him on the Triple Crown trail. On Dec. 16, Fierce Wind won a mile and 70-yard maiden race by 10 1/4 lengths over four overmatched juvenile colts. Fierce Wind is by Dixie Union and is out of the A.P. Indy mare Post Parade, a full sister to stakes winner Parade Queen. His second dam is Mrs. Revere Stakes winner Spanish Parade, and his fifth dam, Bitty Girl, was England's 1973 2-year-old filly champion.

Fair Grounds

Cush, a 2-year-old colt by stamina influence Arch (Kris S.), won a six-furlong maiden race for trainer Andrew Leggio Jr. on Dec. 13. He is out of the Coronado's Quest mare Think Pink. Cush's second dam, Sky Blue Pink, is a half-sister to Freddie Frisson, the dam of Hopeful and Champagne stakes winner First Samurai.

* The Darp, who won a one-mile maiden race on Dec. 14, is from the first crop of Proud Citizen, also the sire of Matron Stakes winner and Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies runner-up Proud Spell. The Darp is also related to Maryfield, winner in October of the inaugural Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint. The Darp's dam is a half-sister to Sly Maid, the dam of Maryfield.

Golden Gate

Searchforthetruth won a six-furlong maiden race Dec. 16. The 2-year-old filly by speed influence Yes It's True is another example of the Rasmussen Factor, as she is cleverly inbred 5x4 to the influential broodmare Golden Beach through her daughters Kankakee Miss and Bambee T.T., who are full sisters. Kankakee Miss produced Clever Trick, while Bambee T.T. produced Ascot Knight.

Hollywood

Zenyatta, a 3-year-old filly by Street Cry, was quite impressive winning her second straight race, an allowance at 1 1/16 miles on Dec. 15. Zenyatta is a half-sister to Balance, and the John Shirreffs-trained filly will add intrigue to the filly and mare division at Santa Anita this winter.
