Promise Me Silver puts perfect record on line in Two Altazano

Promise Me Silver does not know defeat, having won 5 of 5 starts for a record that will be put on the line in Saturday night’s $75,000 Two Altazano division of the Texas Stallion Stakes at Sam Houston Race Park.
While her wins have come by a combined margin of 21 1/2 lengths, keeping her streak alive has not been a simple task. In her most recent start, for example, Promise Me Silver was trapped in traffic but managed to get out and get up for a neck win in the $100,000 Dixie Belle at Oaklawn.
“It was not an ideal trip, and she overcame it,” said Bret Calhoun, who trains Promise Me Silver for Myrna and Robert Luttrell. “That’s why I think so much of this filly. She overcomes obstacles put in her way.”
The Two Altazano, for 3-year-old fillies at seven furlongs, is one of three stakes on the card. The $75,000 Jim’s Orbit division of the Texas Stallion Stakes is for 3-year-old colts and geldings at seven furlongs, while the $50,000 Jersey Village drew the Mike Maker-trained invader Magna Breeze.
Key contenders
Promise Me Silver (Last 3 Beyers: 78-83-77)
* She won a maiden special weight at Lone Star Park in her career debut May 11 and since has proceeded to win four stakes – the Debutante at Churchill Downs, a Texas Stallion Stakes division at Retama Park, the Letellier Memorial after significant trouble at Fair Grounds, and the Dixie Belle.
* Since the Dixie Belle on Jan. 15, she’s been flattered, with the third-place finisher Super Saks coming back to win a maiden special weight at Oaklawn by 11 lengths with a Beyer Speed Figure of 90. In addition, the Dixie Belle runner-up Sarah Sis came back to place in another stakes at Oaklawn.
“The filly that ran second to her – I’ve always thought a lot of her – nearly beat Take Charge Brandi in the next stakes, the Martha Washington,” Calhoun said of Sarah Sis. “That gave a little bit more credit to that race that we ran opening weekend.”
* Calhoun said the Martha Washington would have been a logical spot for Promise Me Silver, but because the Dixie Belle ran a week later than originally scheduled due to inclement weather, the decision was made not to push her back. The Two Altazano then came into play for Promise Me Silver.
“We get to stretch her out a little bit to seven-eighths, so we’ll see how that works for her,” said Calhoun.
* Cliff Berry has the mount from post 2.
Infectious (Last 3 Beyers: 60-42-20)
* She could start as second choice to Promise Me Silver after winning the $50,000 Bara Lass on the Texas Champions Night card Jan. 16 at Sam Houston. She closed from last for a two-length win, one start after defeating open company in a maiden special weight at Remington Park.
* Infectious was third to Promise Me Silver in a maiden race at Lone Star in May.
* Calhoun will be represented by Supermason, Silverhill, and Alamo City in the Jim’s Orbit.
