Profound Moment goes in allowance off impressive debut
Profound Moment couldn’t have been more impressive in winning her debut in a $25,000 maiden-claiming race and now will get tested for class when she runs in a first-level allowance race at Emerald Downs on Sunday.
The 6 1/2-furlong sprint drew eight horses, and it will be interesting to see just how good Profound Moment is.
She was very good in her debut for trainer Michael Puhich. She broke awkwardly from the rail with Joe Steiner aboard in the 5 1/2-furlong dash but quickly recovered and held a 2 1/2-length lead after a quarter-mile in 22.07 seconds. She increased her lead to 3 1/2 lengths after a half-mile in 44.82. With very little urging from Steiner, she drew off to win by 13 lengths and posted a final time of 1:02.64.
Profound Moment received a 74 Beyer Speed Figure for her emphatic win, which is easily the best last-race figure in this field. She drew post No. 6, and with plenty of other speed inside, Steiner might want to find out if she can rate.
She’s Reddy will make her first start for trainer Kevin Eikleberry and obviously will appreciate the substantially easier company after running against the best older filly or mare in North America in her most recent race. She never got very close to Beholder when she finished last in the Grade 3 Adoration at Santa Anita on May 8, but she did run well in her previous start, rallying to finish second in the one-mile, $100,000 Harry Henson at Sunland Park on March 20.
KEY CONTENDERS
Profound Moment, by Haynsefield
Last Beyer: 74
◗ All three of her siblings are multiple winners with 17 wins among them, and her future certainly looks bright after an impressive debut.
She’s Reddy, by Mutakddim
Last 3 Beyers: 64-71-68
◗ She probably wants more distance; she came from out of the clouds when she was the runner-up in the Harry Henson. Nonetheless, she showed decent tactical speed in some of her earlier routes, and with all of the potential speed in the field, this could set up nicely for her.
Bonus Spin, by Hard Spun
Last 3 Beyers: 64-55-65
◗ Trained by Rosann Anderson, she was coming off a layoff when she rallied to finish third behind the stakes winner Sailingforthesun in an optional $25,000 claiming race at Hastings in her first start this year.
DRF FORMULATOR FACT: Over the past five years, Anderson has a 21 percent strike rate with horses making their second start following a layoff.
