Prodigal son Super Stock returns to Oaklawn
HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – Arkansas Derby winner Super Stock could see action at the Oaklawn meet in the very near future, according to trainer Steve Asmussen.
“He’s at Oaklawn now and there’s a possibility of him running in the Poinsettia,” Asmussen said Tuesday.
The new, $150,000 race for 3-year-olds is Dec. 11. It will be run over 1 1/16 miles. Entries will be drawn Monday.
Super Stock became a Grade 1 winner in the Arkansas Derby last April. He is coming off a win in the $250,000 Zia Park Derby on Nov. 23. Asmussen said Super Stock emerged from the race in excellent condition. On the same card in New Mexico, the barn won the $200,000 Zia Park Oaks with Pauline’s Pearl.
“We’re obviously very proud of her 3-year-old year, with her Fantasy and Zia Oaks wins,” Asmussen said, adding that discussions to determine the filly’s next start are being held with breeder and owner Stonestreet Stables.
Asmussen won a third stakes on the Zia Derby undercard, saddling Optionality to a 6 1/2-length victory in the Zia Park Princess. She is a daughter of Gun Runner.
“She’ll most likely run back in Hot Springs,” Asmussen said. “We have not decided for sure.”
Optionality races for her breeder, Winchell Thoroughbreds.
Super Stock is owned by Asmussen’s father, Keith, and Erv Woolsey. Asmussen is looking for his 12th Oaklawn training title.
