Proctor Street outsteps Eponine for narrow Canadian triumph

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Favored Proctor Street outfinished the upwardly mobile Eponine to take the Grade 2 Canadian on Saturday at Woodbine while giving jockey Pietro Moran his fourth winner on the King’s Plate card.
Lupa set a quick pace in the 1 1/16-mile inner turf route as Proctor Street hugged the rail early about 4 1/2 lengths back in fifth while tracking a stalking Eponine.
Eponine was angled outside Lupa for the drive as Proctor Street made her way to the outside. Both ran by Lupa late with Proctor Street scoring by a neck, in a time of 1:41.40 over the firm ground.
Eponine, who was coming off an allowance win at Saratoga, finished 2 1/2 lengths ahead of a tiring Lupa. Power of Destiny checked in fourth and was followed by Queens Command and War Painter. Awesomesauce was withdrawn.
“It was a perfect trip,” Moran said. “Everything fell into place. We got covered up, saved ground, followed the right horse, and she did the rest.”
Erin Campbell, an assistant to winning trainer Brendan Walsh, said the Saratoga-based Proctor Street is a barn favorite.
“She loves her racing,” Campbell said. “The one thing you can always guarantee with this filly is she will try her heart out. And if you could guarantee that with them all, it would be easy.”
Proctor Street ($4.50), a 5-year-old daughter of Street Sense, earned $120,000 of the $200,400 purse for owner Patricia Moseley.
