Privet Moon takes down first stakes in Jean Lafitte at Delta Downs

Privet Moon held off Awesome Gerry by a length to become a stakes winner in the $100,000 Jean Lafitte on Monday at Delta Downs. It was another 10 lengths back in third to Generator.
Drain the Clock, the favorite in the seven-furlong race for 2-year-olds, lost rider Heriberto Figueroa down the backside of the two-turn race. Figueroa walked off and was said to have escaped serious injury, according to an official with Delta.
Privet Moon ($11.40) set the pace from the start, laying down fractions of 23.53 seconds for the opening quarter, 47.83 for the half-mile, and 1:14.02 for six furlongs. In the later stages he had more, holding off a bid from Awesome Gerry while covering the distance on a fast track in 1:27.41.

Diego Saenz rode the winner for trainer Brad Cox.
Privet Moon is a son of Malibu Moon who races for his breeder, Juddmonte Farms. He came into the Jean Lafitte off a four-length win in a maiden special weight at Indiana Grand in his second career start Oct. 21. Privet Moon was making his two-turn debut Monday.
Drain the Clock was 2 for 2 entering the Jean Lafitte. He broke in the air, and down the backside lost Figueroa. The chart of the race noted an “iron,” or one of the stirrups on the saddle, “broke” on the backstretch of the race.
Racing resumes Tuesday at Delta with the running of the $100,000 My Trusty Cat. First post is 12:55 p.m. Central.
