ARCADIA, Calif. -- In a little more than a month, Princess Noor has skyrocketed to the top of Hall of Fame jockey Victor Espinoza’s list of favorite 2-year-old fillies. Princess Noor won her debut in a maiden special weight race at Del Mar on Aug. 22 and her stakes debut in the Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante at seven furlongs on Sept. 6. In Saturday’s Grade 2 Chandelier Stakes for 2-year-old fillies at Santa Anita, Princess Noor was the easy winner of her first start at 1 1/16 miles, confirming her status as a leading contender for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies at Keeneland on Nov. 6. Espinoza has been aboard for all three races. “She’s amazing,” Espinoza said. “She’s one of the best I’ve ever ridden.” Princess Noor earned a fees-paid berth to the BC Juvenile Fillies with the win in the Chandelier Stakes. Espinoza, 48, won the $200,000 Chandelier Stakes for the first time on Saturday. For trainer Bob Baffert, Princess Noor gave him a record 12th win in the top race for 2-year-old fillies at the Santa Anita autumn meeting. Princess Noor ($2.40) won by 8 1/4 lengths over Varda. Despite the massive margin, there was a brief moment of suspense in the opening three furlongs. Princess Noor broke from the inside and was urged forward to maintain position on the first turn. :: Get DRF Betting Strategies for Santa Anita’s Saturday card “I didn’t want to get too much kick back,” Espinoza said. Princess Noor settled behind pacesetter Illumination on the first turn, racing on the rail. Illumination set an early pace of 23.51 seconds for the opening quarter-mile and 48.28 for a half-mile. Espinoza guided Princess Noor to a three-wide position on the backstretch and quickly moved into contention. “I eased her out and in two strides I was right there,” he said. Princess Noor took the lead from Illumination with a quarter-mile remaining and led by four lengths at the eighth pole. She was timed in 1:45.59. “I encouraged her enough to go to the wire,” Espinoza said. “The talent is there. “She’s very happy and kind. I like those kind of horses. She doesn’t have to be on the lead.” Varda, the 6-1 second choice, finished 9 1/4 lengths in front of 9-1 Miss Costa Rica, who was followed by Illumination and Make Mischief in the small field of five. Princess Noor, by the Giant’s Causeway stallion Not This Time, was purchased for $1.35 million at a 2-year-olds in-training sale earlier this year. Princess Noor races for Zedan Racing Stable and has earned $303,000. She won two sprint stakes in the summer of 2019, including the CTBA stakes for statebred 2-year-olds at Del Mar July of that year. At Golden Gate Fields in March, Bulletproof One won an allowance in which she was entered to be claimed for $50,000. There were no claims. Santa Anita has adjusted the description of distances of some turf sprints after consulting with Equibase regarding the gap between the starting gate and the point in the races when the timing system starts. Racing secretary Steve Lym said on Saturday that turf races run at 5 1/2 furlongs when turf rails were at normal setting during the track’s winter-spring meeting earlier this year did not had a significant run-up before the timing mechanism started. Lym said the races were about “30 to 40” feet less than what was expected for a race at that distance, with a run-up. Races at 5 1/2 furlongs were introduced last winter. Beginning Saturday, such races were listed at about 5 1/2 furlongs. When temporary turf rails are set 10 or 20 feet from the normal position, there is a sufficient run-up for races to be classified at a distance of 5 1/2 furlongs, Lym said. Typically, there is a brief run-up from the gate to a beam that trips the timer in races on both the main track and turf course. For turf races at a mile with a normal rail setting, there is a run-up of 107 feet, while a race at 1 1/8 miles has a run-up of 18 feet.
