Princess Dream by a neck in George Brown Memorial Turf Mile
Princess Dream turned in an appropriate conclusion to the trio of stakes this weekend at Suffolk Downs, narrowly winning Sunday's $50,000 George Brown Memorial Turf Mile to remain unbeaten on the season for her local connections.
The Massachusetts-bred filly has won stakes each weekend of live racing at Suffolk this year for owner and breeder Patricia Moseley, the former chairwoman of the track. The venue survived to race this weekend after facing the remote possibility that it would have to cancel Saturday and Sunday's cards due to a legislative snafu. The state's racing law expired on Tuesday night prior to the legislature moving a bill extending the law. However, Gov. Charlie Baker signed a bill extending the law on Thursday after the state Senate passed a bill during an informal session earlier in the day, allowing simulcasting to resume and for racing to go on.
Princess Dream ($4.80) and jockey Joel Sone tracked Danly's Dream by a head at the halfway point, with those two eight lengths clear of the rest of the field. Princess Dream began to edge clear of her foe approaching the quarter pole, kicked clear by a length in the stretch, and then held on by a neck over the rallying Saint Alfred. The latter held the place by a half length over Desert Dotty, who was three lengths clear of Danly's Dream.
The final time over a course officially rated “good” – drying out from “yielding” on Saturday – was 1:41.29.
Princess Dream, a Freud filly trained by Jonathan Buckley, has won four times in as many starts this season and has only once missed the board in her 13 career outings. She won the Miss Patriot Handicap in May at Finger Lakes and then came to her home state for a repeat victory in the Isadorable Stakes in June at Suffolk, followed by a score in the First Episode Stakes here last month.
