Princess Bettina hopes to transfer her successful Southern California form to Penn National as the 9-5 morning-line favorite and 122-pound highweight in Friday’s $150,000 Penn Oaks for 3-year-old fillies at a mile on turf. The Penn Oaks is one of the undercard stakes on the 11-race Penn Mile card with the Lyphard for fillies and mares at 1 1/16 miles on turf, the With Anticipation for 3-year-olds and up at 1 1/16 miles on turf, the Danzig for 3-year-olds at six furlongs, and the New Start for 3-year-old fillies at six furlongs. The Lyphard, With Anticipation, Danzig, and New Start are worth $100,000 and are restricted to horses bred in Pennsylvania. The card is topped by the $400,000 Penn Mile for 3-year-olds on turf. Princess Bettina makes her first start for Todd Pletcher after being transferred from Peter Eurton. She took five others gate to wire in the China Doll on March 18 at Santa Anita. Princess Bettina was entered on dirt in the Santa Anita Oaks on April 8, but was scratched that morning. Considering some of Chad Brown’s pricey European purchases, Royalty Interest was a bargain when bought for $57,964 as a yearling in France. Royalty Interest returned dividends in her debut March 11 at Tampa Bay Downs, rallying from off the pace to graduate as the favorite. :: Take your handicapping to the next level and play with FREE DRF Past Performances - Formulator or Classic.  Selenaia seeks her third consecutive win for trainer Jonathan Thomas while stepping into the stakes ranks; Metaphysical earned a stakes placing in her most recent turf start when second in Gulfstream Park’s Sanibel Island; Malleymoon finished second in Gulfstream’s Wait a While on Dec. 10 before failing to factor in two graded races to kick off her 2023 campaign. Hidewright Away, Majestic Creed, and Miss New York also are entered. Violet Gibson will scratch, per trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. Lyphard Heartyconstitution seeks her third consecutive victory as the 8-5 morning-line favorite in the Lyphard. Stakes-placed last summer on dirt at Churchill Downs, Heartyconstitution shipped to Saratoga, but didn’t race. “We breezed her on the turf,” trainer Joe Sharp said. “That’s when she indicated she was going to be comfortable on either surface.” Sharp laid Heartyconstitution up at his farm for the rest of the year, and she returned with a first-level allowance win on turf at Fair Grounds followed by a second-level allowance victory on dirt at Churchill. “She ran green first off the layoff,” Sharp said, “But she ran a mature race on Oaks Day. It looked like there was plenty left in the tank.” Sharp was aboard for Heartyconstitution’s bullet work on May 26, a half-mile breeze in company with recent Churchill allowance winner Strikingly Spun. Other strong contenders include Maldives Model, who won this race last year over soft ground, and Swan Point, the runner-up in last summer’s Fort Indiantown Gap over this course. With Anticipation Buy Land and See captured last year’s With Anticipation when trained by Tony Dutrow. Now with Guadalupe Preciado, Buy Land and See must overcome a layoff in the 2023 edition, but Preciado is confident in the gelding’s fitness. “He’s doing great,” Preciado said. “I think he’s ready to go.” Buy Land and See was unbeaten in two starts for Preciado last year and has the speed to be close to the pace. Midnight Hauler, also a stakes winner at Penn National, returns from a similar layoff, while Lacco Ameno and You Must Chill, the two-three finishers in last year’s With Anticipation, might have a fitness edge with prior 2023 starts under their belts. Danzig Gordian Knot won his first three for Preciado before completing his juvenile campaign with a third-place effort in the Pennsylvania Nursery at Parx Racing. The Social Inclusion gelding wintered at Gulfstream, but his only start there came against open company on turf in the Texas Glitter. “The owner thought he’d like the grass, and we wanted to find out,” Preciado said. “He ran in spots.” Gordian Knot returns to dirt in the Danzig. “I think he matured,” Preciado said. “He’s more serious.” Theseguysgotgame, Mobeer, Picture This, and Keithsendshelloooo have upset chances. Simply Stated ran well against open company in her lone start this year. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
