Pretty 'n Smart faces strong opposition

Dale Omenson|Sep 03, 2001

SAN MATEO, Calif. - Pretty 'n Smart, who has been stakes-placed twice in Southern California, looks like the one to beat when she meets seven other 3-year-old fillies in the $32,000 allowance feature at Bay Meadows Wednesday.

Pretty 'n Smart, a daughter of Beau Genius, finished seventh in the San Clemente Handicap at Del Mar in her most recent start July 29, but that was not only a Grade 2 but also her first try at a mile.

Before that, she was third in the Manhattan Beach on the Hollywood Park turf and also third in the Grade 2 Railbird going seven furlongs at Hollywood Park.

She figures very strongly here off either of those two sprints.

This does look like a strong field for a first-level allowance race, however. In addition to Pretty 'n Smart, contenders include Go Ruby Go, who has been racing well in allowance company down south, and Cow in Solana, who won a $50,000 claiming race in her last start at Del Mar.

Others who must be considered include Full Moon Lady and Portage Lake, who finished second and third in an allowance race at Bay Meadows Aug. 16, and Pheiffer, an invader from Boise who is undefeated in three career starts.

* Jockey Agapito Delgadillo has been given a three-day suspension beginning Friday for his ride aboard Is It True Mex in the second race last Saturday. Delgadillo was cited for "failure to make a proper effort to maintain a straight course in the stretch." Is It True Mex finished second, but there was no inquiry because the horse he carried out, No Curfew, still got up to win.

* Jockey Roberto Gonzalez went to Micheacon, Mexico, Monday to attend the funeral of his mother. He is expected to remain in Mexico for about a week.

* Bay Meadows has a new phone number for its free scratches and results line. It is (650)-572-6230. When prompted, press 4 for "race day information" and then press either 1 (late changes and scratches) or 2 (race results).
