Preakness 2022: Post positions, odds, Beyer Speed Figures, and analysis

The 147th Preakness is scheduled to be run at 7:01 p.m. Eastern on Saturday at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore. The race will be televised by NBC.
Below is a horse-by-horse look at the field, including morning-line odds, Beyer Speed Figures, and comments from DRF’s Jay Privman and Marty McGee.
1. Simplification (6-1)
Trainer: Antonio Sano
Jockey: John Velazquez
Sire: Not This Time
Owner: Bobo, Tami and De Meric, Tristan
Last Race: Kentucky Derby, 5/7, CD, 4th, 96
Jay Privman: Shuffled back early, had to wait in some traffic on turn, got out, finished well, continues to turn in solid races.
Marty McGee: Colt has been a real stalwart; has enough to be a major player in the exotics if things shake out in his favor.
2. Creative Minister (10-1)
Trainer: Kenny McPeek
Jockey: Brian Hernandez Jr
Sire: Creative Cause
Owner: Fern Circle Stables and Back Racing, LLC
Last Race: CD allowance, 5/7, CD, 1st, 92
Jay Privman: Making stakes debut following two wins going two turns after adding Lasix. Gets more distance but loses Lasix.
Marty McGee: Been highly touted since before his first Fla. start and has run big his last two; different ballgame here, though.
3. Fenwick (50-1)
Trainer: Kevin McKathan
Jockey: Florent Geroux
Sire: Curlin
Owner: Villa Rosa Farm and Harlo Stable
Last Race: Blue Grass, 4/9, KEE, 11th, 44
Jay Privman: Had some early inside trouble in Blue Grass, worked way into position, gave way readily; seems ambitiously placed here.
Marty McGee: Hopes of reliving the Tampa Bay Derby Day upset apparently spurred this entry; one with little to no chance.
4. Secret Oath (9-2)
Trainer: D. Wayne Lukas
Jockey: Luis Saez
Sire: Arrogate
Owner: Briland Farm
Last Race: Kentucky Oaks, 5/6, CD, 1st, 94
Jay Privman: After nightmarish trip in Ark. Derby, returned to face females and was emphatically best in Oaks. Adds intrigue to race.
Marty McGee: Oaks victory still reverberating, but is she good enough to get past Epicenter and maybe a couple of these others?

5. Early Voting (7-2)
Trainer: Chad Brown
Jockey: Jose Ortiz
Sire: Gun Runner
Owner: Klaravich Stables Inc.
Last Race: Wood Memorial, 4/9, AQU, 2nd, 96
Jay Privman: Smartly managed to bypass Derby -- where pace would have doomed his chances -- and point for this instead.
Marty McGee: Surely connections are hoping he's a 2.0 version of their '17 Preakness winner Cloud Computing; many similarities.
6. Happy Jack (30-1)
Trainer: Doug O'Neill.
Jockey: Tyler Gaffalione.
Sire: Oxbow
Owner: Calumet Farm
Last Race: Kentucky Derby, 5/7, CD, 14th, 75
Jay Privman: Was outrun throughout in Derby. Considering way race unfolded, had every opportunity to pick up some pieces, but didn't.
Marty McGee: Calumet ascribes to the popular theory of 'Can't win it unless you're in it,' which largely explains his presence here.
7. Armagnac (12-1)
Trainer: Tim Yakteen.
Jockey: Irad Ortiz Jr.
Sire: Quality Road
Owner: SF Racing, Starlight Racing, Madaket Stables, Stonestreet Stables LLC, et al
Last Race: SA allowance, 5/8, SA, 1st, 93
Jay Privman: Was decided cut below likes of Taiba and Messier in stakes earlier this season. Wheeling back in 13 days.
Marty McGee: Does get Irad, which will attract tote attention, but seems doubtful he can stick with the top ones down the lane.
8. Epicenter (6-5)
Trainer: Steve Asmussen
Jockey: Joel Rosario
Sire: Not This Time
Owner: Winchell Thoroughbreds LLC
Last Race: Kentucky Derby, 5/7, CD, 2nd, 100
Jay Privman: Been the most consistent, accomplished member of this crop to date. Turned in another sharp effort in Derby.
Marty McGee: Standout colt looking to become the first Derby runner-up to win this as the favorite since Prairie Bayou in 1993.

9. Skippylongstocking (20-1)
Trainer: Saffie Joseph
Jockey: Junior Alvarado
Sire: Exaggerator
Owner: Daniel Alonso
Last Race: Wood Memorial, 4/9, AQU, 3rd, 91
Jay Privman: Went kind of one-paced in Wood while never really making impact on top two. Think he's a cut below.
Marty McGee: Figures as one of the longer prices on the board, and deservedly so; outside threat to end the tri or super.
