Prairie Meadows: Upsets fill Classic card

Dave Basler|Aug 28, 2006

Upsets were the rule of the day during the 13th annual Iowa Classic Night at Prairie Meadows, featuring six Thoroughbred stakes for statebreds in various categories.

In the evening's opening event, Winamac Jack ($29.80) took advantage of a pace duel and rallied to score a 2 1/2-length victory over Crimson King Cat in the $74,566 Iowa Cradle Stakes for 2-year-olds.

Alex Birzer rode Winamac Jack to victory for trainer Ray Tracy. Winamac Jack covered the six furlongs in 1:11.39. Tricky's Tick Tock, the 1-5 favorite, had more than $12,000 wagered on him to show and faded to fourth after dueling to midstretch, creating large show payoffs.

* Irish Party opened up a 10-length lead around the turn and held on to score a 1 1/4-length win over Tejano's Oasis in the $75,458 Iowa Sorority for 2-year-old fillies.

Kelly Von Hemel trains Irish Party ($2.80), who won for the third time in four career starts. Glenn Corbett rode Irish Party to victory, covering the six furlongs in 1:10.90.

* Dixie Kate took the lead in upper stretch under jockey Carlos Montalvo and held off Queens Point late to score a three-quarter-length victory in the $74,000 Iowa Breeders' Oaks.

Dixie Kate ($26.20) covered the mile and 70 yards in 1:43.11. Queens Point rallied for the place, 3 1/4 lengths clear of pacesetter Seekingthereinbow, who held third.

* Gilded Leader ($16.20) engaged pacesetter Wild L entering the final turn and the pair dueled to the wire, with Gilded Leader scoring a nose victory in the $73,500 Iowa Breeders' Derby. Jockey Alex Birzer rode Gilded Leader, who ran 1 1/16 miles in 1:44.48.

* Wizky Boy ($33.40) overcame a three-wide trip to score a two-length win over fellow longshot Five Rubies in the $81,600 Ralph Hayes for older colts and geldings. Jockey Joel Campbell was aboard Wizky Boy, who covered the 1 1/16 miles in 1:43.42.

* Elite Lady ($18.40) turned a perfect stalking trip under jockey Alex Birzer into a 2 3/4-length score over Queansco in the $79,200 Donna Reed for older fillies and mares.

Elite Lady clocked the mile and 70 yards in 1:42.30.
