Praire Meadows: Shino breaks hand in traning accident

ALTOONA, Iowa – Jockey Ken Shino broke his right hand during training hours at Prairie Meadows on Tuesday morning when a 2-year-old trained by Kelly Von Hemel got fractious and spun around behind the starting gate. According to Shino’s agent, Cookie Kerrigan, “Ken said the young horse was spooked by a loose horse running around on the track and he came off landing wrong on the hand. Ever since, the swelling has been severe and Ken is scheduled to see an orthopedic surgeon today.”

Shino, who is 9 for 103 during the current Prairie Meadows meet, was in good form with the bulk of his winners coming over the last three weeks. “It couldn’t have come at a worse time,” Kerrigan said, “bu hopefully he’ll be back in a couple of weeks.”

In the meantime, Kerrigan hopes to increase business for jockey Patrick Canchari, who swept the early double last Saturday night.
