Prado named Woolf Award winner

Jay Privman|Jan 09, 2003

ARCADIA, Calif. - Edgar Prado on Thursday was named by Santa Anita as the 54th winner of the George Woolf Memorial Jockey Award, presented annually to a rider for both his riding accomplishments and his character.

Voting since 1985 has been strictly among the nation's riders.

Prado, 37, had the greatest year of his career last year. He won the Belmont Stakes with Sarava, captured the riding crown at Saratoga, and his mounts won more than $18 million, second only to Jerry Bailey's.

"Winning the title at Saratoga was great, winning the Belmont was exciting, and now the Woolf Award," Prado said. "There are so many good things that have happened to me."

Prado will receive the award at a ceremony to be held at Santa Anita, with the date not yet determined.
