HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Power Squeeze doesn’t get a lot of respect at the windows, but all she seems to do is win. Following her 11-1 upset in Saturday’s Grade 2, $250,000 Gulfstream Park Oaks, Power Squeeze will bring a four-race winning streak to Churchill Downs for the Kentucky Oaks on May 3. Since winning a one-mile maiden race last October at Delaware Park, Power Squeeze has won the Cash Run at Gulfstream and the Suncoast Stakes at Tampa Bay before her one-length victory over odds-on favorite Ways and Means in the Gulfstream Oaks. “Every time she runs, she’s a longshot or not a live horse. She keeps showing up and keeps proving people wrong,” trainer Jorge Delgado said Sunday. “Different fillies, different scenarios. She has that winning mindset, that’s very special. As young as she is – she’s not even 3 years old yet – she has a lot of determination and grit. I still believe we can see better from her and she can get in Grade 1 form.” Power Squeeze earned a career-best 92 Beyer Speed Figure for the Gulfstream Park Oaks win, which was her first start at 1 1/16 miles. Delgado and jockey Daniel Centeno believe Power Squeeze should improve with more distance. The Kentucky Oaks is run at 1 1/8 miles. “She never shows signs of being tired,” Delgado said. “The longer the race the more time she has to develop her stride and her talent in the race.” :: Bet the races with a $200 First Deposit Match + FREE All Access PPs! While Power Squeeze is definitely in the Oaks field, the status for Gulfstream Oaks runner-up Ways and Means and third-place finisher Into Champagne are less certain. Ways and Means and Into Champagne both have 50 qualifying points, which puts them in the 14-horse field for now. But there are three more points-scoring races to be run next weekend, and their Oaks status likely depends on the results of the Ashland, Gazelle, and Santa Anita Oaks. Chad Brown, trainer of Ways and Means, said if his filly came out of race well, he would like to give her a chance in the Oaks. Ways and Means had a difficult trip in the Gulfstream Oaks, and Brown feels with that race under her belt she should be that much fitter for the Oaks. Into Champagne picked up 25 points for third in the Gulfstream Oaks and had previously accrued 25 points from other races. Trainer Ian Wilkes said he didn’t like seeing his filly on the lead in the early part of the race and also felt she was on the deeper part of the track being on the inside. “I think it’s a little better race than it looks on paper,” Wilkes said. Wilkes said he would point Into Champagne to the Oaks, but if she didn’t get in that race then she would run in the Grade 2, $600,000 Eight Belles going seven furlongs on the Oaks Day undercard. Meanwhile, Fiona’s Magic, winner of the Davona Dale a month ago, finished eighth in the Gulfstream Park Oaks. Trainer Michael Yates said an endoscopic examination after the race revealed Fiona’s Magic had mucous in her lungs “On a scale of 1 to 5, it was a 4,” he said. Fiona’s Magic has enough points to get into the Kentucky Oaks, but Yates said no decision has been made on whether to point toward that race. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
