Power Gal fires late to win Selene Stakes

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Power Gal powered by the favored Bold Script in the stretch to take the Grade 3, $132,750 Selene Stakes under Emma-Jayne Wilson at Woodbine Saturday.
Power Gal ($8.30) saved ground in fourth on the backstretch in the 1 1/16-mile route, as Souper Charlotte set moderate fractions, with Bold Script in close proximity. Wilson angled Power Gal three wide inside the quarter pole, and they collared Bold Script with about a sixteenth left en route to a one-length win in 1:44.11.
Preferred Guest rallied inside to give trainer Mark Casse a sweep of the top two positions. Bold Script weakened to third under Gary Boulanger. Above All Names and Souper Charlotte rounded out the compact field of 3-year-old fillies.
“I was happy with the trip,” Wilson said. “I was in the pocket the whole way around. I had good view of Bold Script and Boulanger. I could clock what was going on, and I could see everyone around me. It was just of matter of where, when and how. With good horses, you pull the trigger and they go. It makes it simple.”
A Japanese-bred by Empire Maker, Power Gal earned $75,000 in her second stakes victory. She notched her first stakes win at Oaklawn in the Martha Washington. Power Gal is owned by Gary Barber.
