DEL MAR, Calif. – Post positions matter, which partly explains the upset victory by Revera over odds-on Himika in the $100,500 Desi Arnaz Stakes for 2-year-old fillies on Sunday at Del Mar. After she was compromised last out by an inside post and ensuing pace battle in a race won by outside-drawn Himika, posts were switched Sunday in the Desi Arnaz. Revera drew outside Himika, and it made all the difference. With a pace-pressing trip in the clear, Revera ($11.80) won the seven-furlong Desi Arnaz by three-quarters of a length over Himika. It was 4 1/4 lengths farther back to third-place Cosmic Heat. The order of finish was completed by Heaven’s Bolt, Stuffy Mist and Bourbon and Ginger. :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! The filly’s trip was favorable compared to last out, when Himika defeat Revera by more than four lengths in the Anoakia Stakes at Santa Anita. “Last time I was getting all the pressure on the inside,” Fresu said, comparing that trip to the trip Revera got in the Desi Arnaz. “She likes to stalk outside and make one move. Today I was able to do that.” Bourbon and Ginger sped to the lead inside, Himika pressed from second, and Revera pressed the pace three-wide in the clear. Bourbon and Ginger gave way into the lane, and Revera ranged outside Himika. The two battled to deep stretch before Revera inched clear in 1:23.77. The outcome of the Desi Arnaz might have been different if the race had been run Nov. 15 as scheduled. Revera had drawn the rail, which would have put her in the same compromising position as last out. But when Nov. 15 racing was canceled, the Desi Arnaz was redrawn and Revera landed post 4, directly outside Himika. “It was nice having (Himika) on the inside of us instead of the other way around like last time,” assistant trainer Juan Leyva said. “Today was the opposite. I think that made the difference today.” Revera, sired by first-crop stallion Lexitonian, has won two races and $142,274 from four starts. Revera is owned by a partnership that includes Saints or Sinners, Titletown Racing Sables, et al. *** No one hit the $2 pick six Sunday at Del Mar. The pick six carryover when racing resumes on Friday is $51,879. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
