ARCADIA, Calif. – A long-distance turf stakes plagued recently by short prices and small fields is breaking the mold Friday at Santa Anita. A deep field of fillies and mares entered the $100,000 Possibly Perfect Stakes, a 1 1/4-mile turf race with little similarity to recent editions. Three of the last four winners were odds-on and field size averaged less than six. This year, there are no short prices in the field of nine. Hey Jessie is the lukewarm 7-2 program favorite following a listed stakes victory at 1 1/2 miles. Resolve is the 4-1 second choice based on her runner-up finish three starts back in a Grade 3 and a better-than-looked allowance win last out. The wide-open Possibly Perfect field also includes Dreaming of Abba, a stakes-placed mare who has relocated from Florida; Innovative, the potential pacesetter; and Ulysses Rose, a stakes-placed maiden. Others are Watchtower, The Mizen Queen, Cailin Dana, and Kentucky Gal. :: Play Santa Anita racing with confidence. Get DRF Past Performances, Clocker Reports, and more. Hey Jessie and Resolve began racing as 2-year-olds in 2024. Both won or placed in juvenile stakes and improved as their careers unfolded. Now 4, both fillies are in career-best form. Sean McCarthy trains Hey Jessie, who has yet to sprint. McCarthy knew from the start that she was a route filly. “She trained that way, she’s built that way,” he said. “She didn’t have that type of turn of foot. That early, I thought it was a waste of time to sprint her.” Good call by McCarthy and owner-breeder Sayjay Racing. Hey Jessie won a Cal-bred route stakes in her third start and gradually improved since. Sired by Grazen, Hey Jessie enters the Possibly Perfect off a win in the 1 1/2-mile Santa Barbara Stakes. “She’s getting older now, she’s only 4, but she is getting better,” McCarthy said. “She’s getting bigger, she’s getting stronger. She’s learning to run better, as odd as that sounds. I mean, she’s had 12 starts, but some horses take a while to get into gear.” Hey Jessie is in gear, having won four races and $248,288 from 12 starts. Emisael Jaramillo is her rider. Resolve and Dreaming of Abba are trained by Leonard Powell, who won back-to-back Possibly Perfects with Neige Blanche in 2022 and 2023. Resolve is Powell’s best shot Friday. Her last-out victory by a head in an entry-level turf allowance was better than the margin. Resolve “had a lot of things go wrong with her that day,” Powell said. “It was a small field, and Joel [Rosario] got stuck inside. He had to check a couple of times and swing out late to rally. There were a lot of things going against her, and I think she was much the best on the day. The margin of victory doesn’t reflect that.” Kazushi Kimura replaces Rosario, who is serving a suspension and resumes riding Saturday. The last time Resolve raced a a mile and a quarter, she finished second in the Grade 3 Santa Ana. The winner, Take a Breath, returned to win her next start. Hey Jessie finished sixth in the Santa Ana. As a 2-year-old, Resolve placed in the Grade 3 Jimmy Durante at Del Mar, then went off form the following spring after shipping to Turfway Park and finishing 10th in the Bourbonette Oaks. “She kind of lost her way a little bit after that,” Powell said. :: Subscribe to the DRF Post Time Email Newsletter: Get the news you need to play today's races!  He gave her nearly four months off. Since she resumed racing last summer, Resolve has improved, finishing in the money in five of her last seven starts. “She’s steadily been coming back. The last few races, she’s shown up,” Powell said. Resolve, by Midnight Lute, has won two races and $205,210 from 19 starts. Resolve and Hey Jessie are meeting for the fourth time. Based on finish position, Resolve holds a 2-1 edge over Hey Jessie. Powell also starts Dreaming of Abba, a stakes-placed mare in Florida recently purchased for $110,000 in an online auction. She arrived at Powell’s stable on May 19. Her first workout for Powell was bland, but she picked it up in her second local work. “The last work I was very happy with her. She did it the right way, finished really well and acted well post-work,” Powell said. A mile and a quarter is new for Dreaming of Abba. “She’s very tactical, she settles very nicely in her races, so I’m not worried about [the distance],” Powell said. A 5-year-old who has won four races and $206,725 from 21 starts, Dreaming of Abba is making her first start for new owner Alex Thiele. He is expected to travel from his home in Minnesota to watch Dreaming of Abba run Friday at Santa Anita. Her rider is Cesar Belmont. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
