Pompay well-represented in Benny the Bull and Sheer Drama

Squeezadios could move onto show jumping when his career in racing comes to a close.

He cleared a few puddles with aplomb in his last start, managing a three-quarter-length win in a second-level allowance run on a wet track at Gulfstream Park.

Squeezadios will be back in action at Gulfstream on Sunday in the $75,000 Benny the Bull.

“Hopefully, we won’t have any puddles on the ground,” said trainer Terri Pompay.

The Benny the Bull – which has a chance to be run on a wet track with forecasters calling for thunderstorms – shares a card with the $75,000 Sheer Drama for fillies and mares. Both races are over seven furlongs and for 3-year-olds and up bred in Florida.

Squeezadios encountered puddles on the turn and into the stretch of the mile race he won Aug. 15. He prompted the pace, advanced on the turn, lost some momentum when jumping the standing water, then went about his business.

“I don’t train very much on a wet track,” Pompay said. “I do easy stuff, never breeze. He would have never breezed on a track like that. My assistant told the jock, ‘Watch him, because he jumps puddles.’ ”

Pompay said Squeezadios had jumped a puddle in a race one time earlier in his career. He’s run on wet tracks three times, and aside from his recent win has two third-place finishes.

Miguel Vasquez was aboard Squeezadios last out, and the horse gave him his fifth win on the card that day. The pair will team up again Sunday from post 4.

Squeezadios is a 4-year-old on of Adios Charlie who races for My Purple Haze Stables.

“He’s a cool horse,” Pompay said. “He really looks the part. He’s big. He’s wide. He carries a lot of flesh on him. He’s got poise about him.”

Squeeziados is part of a field of eight, with his chief rivals Noble Drama and Red Crescent, who both are cutting back in distance after finishing a respective second and third in the $60,000 Sea of Tranquility at a mile and a sixteenth July 18 at Gulfstream.

My Purple Haze Stables, Pompay, and Vasquez also will team together in the Sheer Drama, with Heiressall. She comes off a runner-up finish in the $60,000 Ana T., a six-furlong race July 25 at Gulfstream. Pompay likes the added ground Heiressall picks up Sunday.

“I think it’s the perfect distance for her,” she said. “She’s won at three-quarters, but it’s always like she had to hustle a little bit to get position and it takes a little out of her.”

Heiressall, who was second in last year’s Sheer Drama, has tactical speed and could get a tracking trip behind Liza Star and Thissmytime.

Liza Star invades from Saratoga, where she was third in a third-level allowance that carried an optional claiming price of $80,000. The race was July 31. She’s now back racing over a track on which she is 10 for 28.

Also in the eight-horse field is Starship Bonita, who won the Sheer Drama in 2018.

The entire card Sunday is restricted to horses bred in Florida.
