Politicallycorrect unleashed a sweeping move into the stretch and powered home a five-length winner of the 123rd edition of the $225,000 Bashford Manor Stakes for 2-year-olds on Sunday at Churchill Downs.   Politicallycorrect ($16.62) was a $195,000 selection by trainer Chris Davis less than four months ago, out of the Ocala Breeders' Sales Co.'s March 2-year-olds in training sale. The son of Violence now races for Walmac Farm, Five Fillies Stable, and Ryan Ritt, and Davis, who is based at Turfway Park, was excited to unveil the colt at Churchill Downs. "The horses really seem like they're running really well training on the Tapeta up there, and it translates really well to the dirt," Davis said. Politicallycorrect, under Jose Ortiz, indeed won his debut on May 30 at Churchill, setting a pressured pace before kicking clear to win by 1 1/4 lengths going 5 1/2 furlongs. For his next start beneath the twin spires, Davis told Ortiz he wouldn't mind different tactics in the six-furlong Bashford Manor. :: Bet with the Best! When you look at him, he really doesn't say 'sprint.' A big reason why we liked him at OBS was his size ... I told Jose, there's so much speed in this race that if he doesn't break, just sit and tip him out and let him run." Indeed, it played out just that way. The scramble was on in a big field of 12 through the opening quarter, with Bodacious, coming off an impressive debut win in California with one of the highest Beyer Speed Figures thus far this year for a 2-year-old, emerging between horses for the lead through a snappy quarter of 21.41 seconds, with Spiralizer on his inside and Enduring Spirit on his outside. Meanwhile, Ortiz was unhurried with Politicallycorrect, who was last through that opening quarter Bodacious didn't get a breather, continuing to lead through the half in 45.97 with Enduring Spirit inching up to his throatlatch. But suddenly a host of closers made themselves known to the leaders, who began to tire. It was Politicallycorrect, widest of all on the outside, who had worked his way to fourth through the second quarter and emerged full of run after cutting the corner. The colt made the other challengers moot quickly, opening several lengths once straightened away. With only an occasional reminder from Ortiz, he coasted under the wire never seriously threatened. The final time for the six furlongs on a drying-out track rated fast was 1:10.56. Smoken Wicked, who was 10th at the quarter pole, came on well for second as the pace collapsed, finishing 3 3/4 lengths clear of Ivan the Great in third. They were followed, in order, by Mo Hair Sam, Conquering Cat, the favored Bodacious, Spiralizer, War Tax, Enduring Spirit, Moneyline, Happyflyer, and Heat. The latter, sent away as the second choice, endured an awful trip, as he was bumped at the start and clipped heels near the five-sixteenths pole. Earlier on the card, favored Vodka With a Twist had an uncomplicated trip on the front end to establish herself among the leaders of this division thus far with a victory in the $225,000 Debutante Stakes, the sister race to the Bashford Manor. Vodka With a Twist ($4.62) was fourth on debut after hopping at the start at Keeneland. She was beaten two lengths by well-regarded Tapit First, while third-place Whatintheliteral came back to win the Astoria Stakes. Vodka With a Twist then won her second start going five furlongs at Churchill. Off that performance, the daughter of freshman sire Thousand Words was privately purchased, and now races for Medallion Racing, Omar Aldabbagh, and Bill Strauss, and is trained by Phil D'Amato. Vodka With a Twist quickly rewarded her new connections. The filly was away well under Flavien Prat, and led by more than a length through splits of 21.51 seconds for the quarter and 45.47 for the half. When Prat set her down in the lane, she easily held sway, opening her advantage to three lengths at the wire. "Down the backside, I was able to kind of get away from them, and then she relaxed really well around the turn," Prat said. She finished the six furlongs in 1:10.58 - noteworthy as it was quite close to the time the colts ran, despite coming on a track rated muddy at that time before continuing to dty through the card. So There She Was chased Vodka With a Twist around the track in second throughout, and was five lengths clear of third-place Fortuna Mia despite running on the incorrect lead to the wire. The top three were followed by Glee, Adeera, Daisy Duke, and La Marinera. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
