With Ake Svanstedt opting to go early to Woodbine Mohawk Park to drive his trainees in the Peaceful Way and William Wellwood Memorial eliminations on Saturday night, that left the drive on Hambletonian Oaks champion Warrawee Michelle available in the $250,000 Delmonica Hanover for 3-year-old filly trotters on Saturday afternoon at Pocono Downs at Mohegan Pennsylvania. Filling in was James MacDonald, and he handled her with his usual apblomb, as Warrawee Michelle went a 1:51 3/5 mile to equal the track and stakes record. Starting from the outside post eight proved little difficulty for Warrawee Michelle as she stepped right out of the gate and was the leader before the 27 2/5 opening quarter. On the other hand, contenders Buy A Round (Andy McCarthy) and Elista Hanover (David Miller) hadn't gotten off to brisk beginnings from posts one and two as they were fifth and sixth at that station. MacDonald saw no pressure in the second quarter, and that allowed him to steal a 29 second panel to get to the half in 56 2/5. It was going to be tough for the others after that, but French Champagne (Dexter Dunn) did offer a first-over bid out of fourth, and that gave cover to Buy A Round and Elista Hanover. However, French Champagne stalled in third and Elista Hanover gapped as the pace increased to 1:23 2/5 at three-quarters. Warrawee Michelle kept her clear advantage around the the final bend, and although French Champagne kept plugging away to the outside and pocket-sitter Draw The Line (Yannick Gingras) had room in the passing lane, they couldn't reach Warrawee Michelle, who went on to a 2 1/4 length victory. French Champagne did finish second to give Svanstedt a 1-2 finish with his trainees and Draw The Line got third. Elista Hanover and Buy A Round had to settle for fourth and fifth. "Thank you Ake, for sure. Live one to pick up, those ones are always fun. Just happy to be along for the ride today," offered MacDonald post-race. "I'd only kind of seen her race. I'd obviously never sat behind her. All the instructions I got were Ake said 'leave and see what happens.' Pretty easy instructions with a great horse like that, and once she touched down on the front and she didn't get stressed out too bad, I was pretty confident going into the last turn. "I had heard Dex kind of cruising first-up and I still had a good hold of my filly. I saw the 1 and 2, it's hard to get away from the inside sometimes, and they hadn't gotten away great today, so I was pretty much licking my chops." By Walner, Warrawee Michelle was bred by Warrawee Farm and is owned by Svanstedt in partnership with Santandrea Inc. and Young Guns. She is a six-time victor from 14 trips behind the gate, has put away $872,875 and paid $11.20 to win as the 9-2 fourth choice. "He kind of got that information that we're leaving today and she's ready to race," remarked Ake's wife Sarah. "She has either the New Jersey Classic or she goes to Canada. We haven't decided yet. We'll take it one day at a time here." ► Sign up for our FREE DRF Harness Digest Newsletter The $125,000 Consolation I saw She Shaq (J. MacDonald) on the engine at the 27 second quarter-mile mark, but Sambuca Hanover (D. Miller) drove on two-wide and became the new tempo-setter on the way to the 55 4/5 half-mile point. Sambuca Hanover continued to show the way to three-quarters in 1:23 4/5 as the cover flow got stalled by a struggling and first-over Chaparmbro. That sent second-over Paulina Hanover (Tim Tetrick) and third-over Nymeria (Matt Kakaley) back to the pylons on the last turn. Meanwhile, Sambuca Hanover got through the final turn without issue, was on a comfortable lead in the stretch and looked like she might have a pretty easy time of it. However, late in the mile Paulina Hanover, who was the 4-5 favorite in the contest, hit top gear and began to cut into Sambuca Hanover's margin. Paulina Hanover didn't have enough, though, as Sambuca Hanover held her off to tally by a head in a lifetime-best clocking of 1:52 4/5. Nymeria also made up ground in the lane and checked in third. A daughter of Bar Hopping, Sambuca Hanover competes for trainer Nifty Norman and owners David McDuffee, Paul Bordogna and Melvin Hartman. She has a summary of 7-42 from 20 appearances, has banked $390,639 and returned $11.00 to win as the 9-2 third choice. In the $75,000 consolation II, Southwind Banshee (Mark MacDonald) cut the opening quarter in 27 2/5 after she blasted out from post eight and then yielded to sit behind Slip Sliding Away (Dunn) before the 57 second half. Slip Sliding Away maintained control through three-quarters in 1:24 4/5, but 3-5 favorite Soiree Hanover (Tetrick), who had been positioned third, came with a first-over attack passing that marker that carried her into the lead on the final bend. From there, Soiree Hanover drew off to score by 3 3/4 lengths in a life's-best 1:52 2/5, with Cheval Rapide (Todd McCarthy) up for second and Slip Sliding Away back in third. This was the first win of the year and the seventh lifetime for Soiree Hanover, last year's Dan Patch Award winner for this division. The daughter of Walner, bred by Hanover Shoe Farms, is owned by Snogarps Gard Inc. and trained by Lucas Wallin. She has pocketed $677,508 and paid $3.40 to win.
