Coming off one of the greatest days of his training career, Jim Campbell is quite cautious heading into Saturday's Sun Stakes at The Downs at Mohegan Sun Pocono with Hambletonian champion Cool Papa Bell. "That's a good group of horses he's up against," said Campbell on Tuesday morning. "I'm happy with the draw." Unlike the Hambletonian where Cool Papa Bell was a 52-1 shot from an outside post, Saturday's $300,000 Earl Beal Jr. Memorial (race 12) finds the altered son of Chapter Seven from the pole position versus seven rivals. "He came out of the Hambletonian in good shape," said Campbell. For Campbell the Beal represents a point in the season where horses will define themselves. He had his horse in the right place at the right time two weeks ago but doesn't know whether Cool Papa Bell is just among the top horses in North America or is the best. Much will be determined Saturday when he faces a solid group. Included in the Beal field are two Hambletonian rivals, Periculum (post three) and Temporal Hanover (post six). That duo hails from the powerful Marcus Melander stable, and they finished fifth and third, respectively, in the Hambletonian behind Cool Papa Bell, as well as their stablemate Joviality S. Campbell is confident that Cool Papa Bell will handle the five-eighths mile track this week. "I know he got on a line in the Hambletonian eliminations," said Campbell. "In the final he came along the inside and there were no issues, and when he raced at Yonkers [half-mile track] he got around the turns perfectly." DRF Harness: FREE Harness Eye PPs, full-card analysis & watch the races live With four wins in eight starts this year, Cool Papa Bell has been consistent and reliable for the most part. "He got kind of sideways for Scottie [Zeron] at Vernon behind the gate and made a break. It was the same thing he did last year at Lexington," Campbell said, looking back. "Other than that, he's been solid." Campbell noted that though Hambletonian Oaks champion Fashion Schooner was made eligible to the $250,000 Delmonica Hanover for 3-year-old trotting fillies, one of four major sophomore stakes that comprise the Sun Stakes, the Walner-sired lass was kept out of the race. "We've decided to keep her at the Meadowlands and point her towards the Jersey Classic. She's fine," Campbell said. The $300,000 Max Hempt Memorial for 3-year-old pacing colts and geldings (race 11) is a rematch of sorts between Meadowlands Pace and Cane Pace winner Beach Glass and trainer Ron Burke's emerging star Bythemissal, a winner in the Milstein on August 13 at Northfield Park, as well as The Adios at The Meadows where he defeated Beach Glass. "It's hard to know how long he can keep this going," said Burke of the form spree that Bythemissal has been on. Last week's 1:48 4/5 blowout mile over the half-mile track was as visually impressive a mile as we've seen all year. "Chris said he hit the bike," Burke said regarding the appearance of a misstep by the Downbytheseaside-sired gelding in the homestretch of the Milstein. Burke has been high on Bythemissal for some time, and he explained why. "He could beat every one of my horses in training," Burke said bluntly of the incredible talent that Bythemissal possesses. On Saturday Bythemissal drew post three outside of Beach Glass (post one) and another Burke-trained entrant in JK Victory. "He raced ok at Northfield, but he wasn't comfortable getting around that track," Burke said. "I think he'll be much better getting around Pocono." JK Victory has finished first or second in all eight of his 3-year-old starts with a 1:48 2/5 career-best taken on July 1 at Harrah's Hoosier Park. ► Sign up for our FREE DRF Harness Digest Newsletter Burke has three fillies entered in the 10th race James Lynch Memorial for 3-year-old pacing fillies with Sweet Kisses, a recent winner in the $102,355 Adioo Volo (July 30) at The Meadows, as perhaps his best chance after she landed the pole position. "She's starting to put it all together," said Burke. "She's had issues and now we're finally able to train her." The daughter of Sweet Lou enters the Lynch off a career-best 1:50 victory where she came from post seven as a 34-1 outsider for the Grand Circuit triumph. On the other end of the spectrum is a more accomplished filly in Sea Silk, a lifetime winner in 13 of 17 starts that drew post eight in the talent-laden group. "She's another one that needs more racing," said Burke of the Downbytheseaside-sired filly. "Post eight won't help." The Delmonica Hanover (race nine) is a rematch of sorts between Joviality S (post one) and Jiggy Jog S (post three). The pair finished second and fourth, respectively, in the Hambletonian as the only fillies against eight male rivals. The 14-race Sun Stakes card includes consolations in all of the major stakes races, as well as a pair of $100,000 Invitationals. Bella Bellini (post seven) heads the field in the Sebastian K for open trotters and Allywag Hanover (post four) faces a strong field that includes This Is The Plan (post six) in the $100,000 Always B Miki for open pacers. Post time is 1:30 p.m. for the Saturday Pocono program.
