Trainer Todd Pletcher’s trio of Breeders’ Cup Classic candidates, two of whom are coming off Grade 1 stakes victories, returned to the work tab Thursday in Saratoga to prepare for the $7 million race to be held Nov. 1 at Del Mar. Mindframe, a two-time Grade 1 winner this year who lost his rider soon after the start of the Jockey Club Gold Cup at Saratoga on Aug. 31, went a half-mile in 49.77 seconds over the Oklahoma training track in company with Swiss Army Knife. Pletcher confirmed that Mindframe will train up to the Classic, something Pletcher strongly hinted at the day after the Gold Cup. In the Jockey Club, Mindframe was the one most impacted by a chain reaction of horses coming down from the outside when he was bumped by White Abarrio, which caused Irad Ortiz Jr. to be unseated. Mindframe ran loose until nearly the quarter pole before being caught by an outrider. “It wasn’t a true race but he still pretty much went around there at least a mile and an eighth,” Pletcher said. “To try to rush back and make up for that, we didn’t feel was going to move us forward for an optimal effort on Nov. 1, which is obviously what we’re looking for. Look, it’s not ideal. It’s one of those situations you can’t control and you just try to regroup and make the best of it.” Antiquarian, who won the Jockey Club Gold Cup, worked a half-mile Thursday in 50.82 with Epic Quest. “He’s doing great, came out of the race well,” Pletcher said. :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! DRF Past Performances and Picks are available now. Though John Velazquez rode Antiquarian in the Gold Cup, he is committed to ride Fierceness in the Breeders’ Cup Classic. Pletcher said he has not yet decided who will ride Antiquarian in the Classic. Fierceness, last year’s Classic runner-up who is coming off a victory in the Grade 1 Pacific Classic at Del Mar on Aug. 30, worked a half-mile in 50.34 in company with Endorse. “I thought he came back terrific, handled the ship really well, came back with good energy, held his weight well,” Pletcher said. “He breezed yesterday like we’ve been accustomed to seeing. He was on cruise control throughout.” Pletcher has a potential fourth BC Classic horse in Locked, who will try to bounce back from a couple of subpar efforts when he runs in the Grade 2, $300,000 Woodward Stakes at Aqueduct on Sept. 27. Locked won the Grade 1 Santa Anita Handicap in March but finished fourth behind Fierceness in the Alysheba at Churchill Downs and third behind Phileas Fogg and Antiquarian in the Suburban at Saratoga. The Woodward field is expected to be small, as there are two other stakes being run in the division the same weekend – the Grade 2, $500,000 Lukas Classic at Churchill on Saturday and the $200,000 Battery Park Stakes at Delaware Park on Sept. 28. Film Star, a recent claim by Rob Atras, and Gould’s Gold are likely for the Woodward. Post Time and Willy D’s will choose between the Woodward and the Battery Park. Meanwhile, Pletcher’s pair of Grade 1-winning juveniles, Tommy Jo and Ted Noffey, also returned to work. Tommy Jo, the Spinaway winner, worked a half-mile in 48.34 at Saratoga on Thursday, while Ted Noffey worked a half-mile in 49.39 on Friday. Tommy Jo is being pointed to the Grade 1 Alcibiades at Keeneland on Oct. 3, while Ted Noffey is headed to the Grade 1 Breeders’ Futurity at Keeneland on Oct. 4. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
