Pletcher runners highlight Thursday features
Back-to-back one-mile allowances, each worth $47,000, anchor a 10-race Thursday card at Gulfstream Park that kicks off another four-day race week with a twilight first post of 2 p.m. Eastern. Both co-features attracted major contenders from trainer Todd Pletcher’s Palm Beach Downs division.
Race 7, which goes around two turns on turf, lured the uncoupled Pletcher duo of Songeur and Elk Camp. Race 8, which goes around one turn on the main track, figures to have Incredible Grace as a solid favorite for Pletcher off a flashy June 29 debut victory.
The 20-cent Rainbow 6 sequence starts with the fifth race, but there won’t be nearly as much interest as there was before a Las Vegas bettor emptied the jackpot pool with a $734,403 megascore last Friday. After starting from scratch Saturday, the pool stands at $36,964 into Thursday.
Gunnevera returns Friday
Gunnevera, easily the most accomplished horse currently in training on the South Florida circuit, figures to be a huge favorite in the Friday feature, a $48,000 allowance at 1 1/16 miles. The 4-year-old colt is among a field of just five entered in race 4 (3:30 post).
Unraced since incurring a hoof injury when finishing eighth in the March 31 Dubai World Cup, Gunnevera is being prepped by trainer Antonio Sano for the Grade 1 Woodard on Sept. 1 at Saratoga. Edgard Zayas has the mount.
