The mixed sale season continues in a racing-rich regional marketplace with a number of incentives for breeders as Fasig-Tipton hosts its Midlantic December mixed and horses of racing age sale on Tuesday at the Maryland State Fairgrounds in Timonium.The mixed section of the sale and the horses of racing age supplement have separate catalogs, although the sale will be held as a single session. The main catalog, consisting of broodmares and prospects, weanlings, and yearlings, has 156 horses cataloged, including supplemental entries.“This is an important sale for the Midlantic region,” Midlantic director of sales Paget Bennett said in a press release. “There are several quality producers cataloged, as well as weanlings from a variety of statebred programs by both leading national and regional sires.”A strong weanling marketplace was a highlight of the major mixed sales in November in Kentucky, and solid sire power has that trend poised to continue here. Weanlings are on offer from perennial Maryland leading sire Great Notion; fellow Maryland leaders Divining Rod, Friesan Fire, Holy Boss, Hoppertunity, Irish War Cry, and Uncle Lino; leading Pennsylvania sire Warrior’s Reward; leading New York freshman sire Solomini; and leading West Virginia sire Juba.Regional first-crop sires represented by weanlings include the regally bred Galwai, by Dubawi and from the family of Goldikova, standing in Maryland; graded stakes winner Engage, by Into Mischief, standing in Maryland; and California-bred stakes winner Galilean, standing in New York.A number of Kentucky stallions also are well-represented in this selection of weanlings, including Grade 1 winners Complexity, Vekoma, and Volatile, all of whom had their first yearlings well-received this year. Other Kentucky stallions represented by weanlings include solid racehorse sires Ghostzapper, Jimmy Creed, and Midshipman.Prominent regional sires also are well-represented among the broodmares in foal in the catalog, with mares being offered in foal to Maryland leaders Blofeld, Bourbon Courage, Divining Rod, Golden Lad, Great Notion, Holy Boss, Hoppertunity, Irish War Cry, and Uncle Lino; first-year Maryland stallion True Valour; and first-year New York stallions Fire At Will and Mind Control, both Grade 1 winners.After the mixed offerings, the sale will immediately continue with the horses of racing age portion, with a catalog of 60 horses.Young horses with recent form are in demand in this marketplace – as evidenced at the Keeneland November horses of racing age sale, where 3-year-old Double Dream and 2-year-old Edgartown, both coming off maiden special weight victories, each sold for $350,000 to lead the day. At a regional sale such as this, horses from a statebred program who are thus eligible for various incentives are particularly attractive to local buyers.Horses closest to that criteria in the Midlantic catalog include 3-year-old Bazinga D, a Pennsylvania-bred Hoppertunity colt who was third, beaten a half-length, in a Charles Town maiden special on Oct. 13; the 2-year-old Bossy Jeans, a New York-bred Laoban filly who was third by two lengths in a maiden special Nov. 2 on the Aqueduct turf; 3-year-old Dark Pool, a Maryland-bred Collected filly who has been on the board in 3 of 4 starts at the maiden-special and maiden-claiming levels; 3-year-old Deacon Dougie, a Pennsylvania-bred Weigelia gelding who is an allowance winner this year at Presque Isle and Thistledown; and 3-year-old Mariana Grande, a West Virginia-bred Unified filly who is an allowance winner at Charles Town. There also are a number of unraced 2-year-olds in the catalog.
