The decision to supplement Manchego into Sunday afternoon's $250,000 Spirit of Massachusetts for free-for-all trotters at Plainridge Park worked out well for her and her connections as she front-stepped her way to a 1:50 victory, just missing her own track record by two-fifths of a second. With the victory, Manchego crested the $3 million mark in career earnings, with her bankroll now sitting at $3,016,002. According to USTA records, she is just the fourth trotting mare to reach that milestone, joining Bee A Magician ($4,055,865), Moni Maker ($3,145,284 in North America, plus $2,443,972 in foreign earnings), and Hannelore Hanover ($3,069,857). Peace Corps ($4,137,737) also eclipsed that total, but does not show up on the USTA list. Starting from post five in the field of six, Manchego and driver Dexter Dunn had to work some to get past a hard-leaving Lindy The Great (Andy Miller), but they were able to do so prior to the 26 4/5 opening quarter. Dunn then stole a nice second quarter breather for Manchego, with the half reached in 55 3/5. ► Sign up for our FREE DRF Harness Digest Newsletter The tempo quickened after that marker, as despite facing no outside attacks, Manchego ripped off a 27 second panel to put three-quarters up in 1:22 3/5. From there, Manchego kept command around the last turn, and although Lindy The Great did make some headway in the lane, Manchego kept him at bay to win by half a length. Crystal Fashion (Tim Tetrick) got up for third, Forbidden Trade (Dan Dube) was fourth, Mississippi Storm (Todd McCarthy) took fifth, and Eurobond (Bruce Ranger) rounded out the order. "Andy's horse got out of the gate really good. We drew right next to him, so we just followed him across there into the first turn. It took me a while to get there, but I wasn't pushing her too hard," said Dunn. "This is track is such a fast track that those fractions can come up pretty quick on you. She's just a pleasure to sit behind. "I knew it was going to be a good back-half because that second quarter was pretty generous for us. She strided out good down the back. I knew the last half was going to be quick, so the time wouldn't be too bad. It's a credit to the track here, how fast it is today, and a credit to her for how fast she can go." A 6-year-old mare by Muscle Hill, Manchego is trained by Nancy Takter for owner Black Horse Racing. Manchego has now won 38 times from 62 career starts, and she paid $2.20 to win as the 1-9 favorite.
