Pimlico: Mr. O'Brien pulls off upset

Mike Delnagro|May 01, 2004

Mr. O'Brien, an 8-1 shot ridden patiently by Rick Wilson, stalked two front-running longshots for a half-mile, then snatched the lead and pulled away, winning the $50,000 Henry S. Clark Stakes by nine lengths.

Spruce Run, 4-1, rallied from fifth early to gain second, 2 1/2 lengths ahead of even-money favorite Tam's Terms, who finished third.

Mr. O'Brien ran the mile on firm turf in 1:35.80, paid $19 to win and teamed with Spruce Run for an $88.40 exacta.

"He relaxed behind the front two and at the top of the stretch he just took off by himself," Wilson said.
