BALTIMORE – The weather forecast for Preakness Day calls for temperatures in the mid-70s under cloudy skies, which should translate to a fast track. That scenario is just fine for jockey Julian Pimentel and trainer Mike Trombetta, who will team up with Win Win Win, the 10th-place finisher in the Kentucky Derby over a sloppy track that he didn’t relish. “The Derby were not his conditions," Pimentel said. “I do not think he handled the racetrack. He was not really comfortable on that surface. Still, he made a little run in the Derby and was only beaten 8 1/2 lengths. It just wasn’t going to work out for us that day.” Trombetta feels the same way. “The wet track was not very desirable for him,” he said. Win Win Win started his career with three wins in his first four starts under Pimentel, including a track-record performance in the seven-furlong Pasco Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs. Irad Ortiz Jr. took over for a third-place performance in the Tampa Bay Derby and a second in the Blue Grass before Pimentel regained the mount for the Derby. Pimentel has been getting aboard Win Win Win since before he made his debut at 2. “We always knew he was a nice horse, we just didn’t know how nice, what caliber he would be,” Pimentel said. “He's maturing now, getting better.” The Charlotte Weber-bred and -owned son of Hat Trick figures to be a fair price with a shot in the Preakness, which is shaping up as a wide-open contest. Trombetta and Pimentel have been a good combination ever since Pimentel began riding in Maryland in 2006. The 38-year-old Columbian jockey and Trombetta have won 364 races together from 1,841 mounts, a win average of 19 percent. “Julian is one of those riders who can think on his feet, and he’s level-headed,” Trombetta said. “If something doesn’t go as expected, he can adjust. I use other riders, of course, but he gets a lot of the good ones.” Roniel Gerardo has been Pimentel’s agent for 11 years. He thinks the partnership works because “Julian and Mike have respect for each other’s input.” Win Win Win will be Pimentel’s third ride in the Preakness. He finished eighth at 12-1 aboard Kid Cruz for Linda Rice in 2014 after winning the Federico Tesio and Private Terms on him. He was 11th in 2011 on 42-1 Norman Asbjornson for Christopher Grove. “Both of the horses I have ridden were nice horses, but they were just running against really tough company,” Pimentel said. “I like Win Win Win. The first four from the Derby aren't coming. I think that gives us a pretty good chance.” And Pimentel would only be too glad to win it for Trombetta. “He is a very good trainer and very easy to ride for,” Pimentel said. “He knows things happen during a race and he stays calm and doesn’t get too excited.”
