Pickett, Atchata win divisions of D.S. 'Shine' Young Futurity

Pickett became the first stakes winner for freshman sire Goldencents on Saturday night when he rolled by nine lengths in the $75,000 colts-and-geldings division of the D.S. “Shine” Young Futurity at Evangeline Downs.
The stakes shared a card with the $75,000 fillies division, in which Atchata rolled by 6 1/2 lengths to become her dam’s second winner in the race, following Actif Storm in 2016.
Pickett ($7.60) also was the first winner for Goldencents when he captured a maiden special weight by 6 1/2 lengths May 30 at Evangeline. He led throughout that night and did the same in the Shine Young.
Pickett broke sharply and took the field through an opening quarter in 21.97 seconds while under pressure from Beto. The eventual winner began to separate himself from that rival on the turn and increased his advantage to the wire while covering 5 1/2 furlongs on a fast track in 1:05.37.
Tim Thornton was aboard for trainer Glenn Delahoussaye.
Goldencents won back-to-back runnings of the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile. He stands at Spendthrift Farm.
Pickett was a $50,000 purchase as a yearling by owner Charlie Carlton at an auction put on by the Equine Sales Co. of Louisiana. He is out of the mare Street Beat, who produced the multiple stakes winners Hisse, an earner of $435,681, and Ahead of Her Time, an earner of $340,100.
Victory Trip finished second to Pickett, while it was another 2 1/2 lengths back to Beto in third.
Atchata ($3.60) invaded off a maiden special weight win June 15 at Belmont. The start came over six furlongs on turf, and she was making her dirt debut Saturday. She is by Apriority, who was a Grade 3 winner on dirt. Atchata ($3.60) was always prominent, as she set fractions of 22.12 seconds for the opening quarter and 46 seconds for the half-mile before going on to cover 5 1/2 furlongs in 1:06.25.
Diego Saenz was aboard for trainer Steve Asmussen.
Bill and Corrine Heiligbrodt own Atchata, who is from the Stormy Atlantic mare Sweet Jackie Jo.
D'rockette, at 82-1, was second, finishing a half-length clear of third-place finisher Scat At Ms. Pat's.
