Pick three led by Suances pays $50.40

Mary Rampellini|Jun 15, 2002

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - Suances was on cruise control throughout to win the $250,000 Dallas Turf Cup wire to wire at Lone Star Park on Saturday, a race that served as the first leg of a national pick three completed by the

Grade 2 Hollywood Breeders' Cup Oaks at Hollywood Park and the Grade 1 Stephen Foster at Churchill Downs.

A total of $218,277 was bet on the pick three, which was held in conjunction with the National Thoroughbred Racing Association's "NTRA Summer Racing Tour on CBS." The bet returned $50.40 on a $2 ticket following Adoration's 3-1 win in the Oaks and Street Cry's 2-1 win in the Stephen Foster. Suances paid $2.80.

In the Dallas Turf Cup, Suances moved to the lead shortly after the start of the 1 1/8-mile race, and led the field through an opening six furlongs in 1:12.60. He continued to control the race through a mile in 1:36.90 before winning by 1 1/2 lengths over a late-running Our Main Man. It was another 1 3/4 lengths back in third to Candid Glen.

Suances covered the 1 1/8 miles over firm turf in 1:49.09 under David Flores, who never moved on the horse in the stretch. "I was just guiding him to the wire," said Flores, aboard for trainer Darrell Vienna. "He was just doing it all himself. This, I think, is a great horse. He looks in the future to be a Breeders' Cup horse."

Flores has won 14 stakes in 31 mounts at Lone Star.

Suances improved his record to eight wins from 10 starts with his Dallas Turf Cup score, and the $150,000 he earned increased his career winnings to $363,720.

Owned by Red Baron's Barn, he is is being pointed for the Grade 1, $400,000 Eddie Read Handicap at Del Mar on July 28, with his major objective this summer being the Grade 1 Arlington Million at Arlington Park on Aug. 17.

There will be two more national pick threes tied to the Summer Racing Tour in the coming weeks, one on June 29 and the other July 6.
