Pick six: Take two in tricky last leg

Brad Free|Oct 10, 2009

ARCADIA, Calf. - Just for kicks, let's say your pick six ticket is 5-for-5 going into the final leg, a maiden sprint for 2-year-olds.

How many horses does your ticket need to win the jackpot? The correct answer, of course, is "all." But with 10 entrants, "all" is cost-prohibitive.

Get My Fix is the 5-2 morning-line favorite for good reason. Runner-up in two straight at Del Mar, the Brian Koriner trainee finished second last time in a productive race.

The winner Dave in Dixie returned with a better-than-looked sixth in the Grade 1 Norfolk Stakes; third-place The Skinny Man returned to run second in a stakes at Fairplex; fourth-place Seattle Ruler returned to win a stakes at Fairplex; seventh-place Summer Movie returned to win a maiden race on turf. Good field, good race.

Considering how well Get My Fix ran to finish second, and how well his competition subsequently ran, Get My Fix might be a pick-six "singleton" in race 10.

Or, maybe not. The first-time starter Frisco Kid merits serious consideration. Frisco Kid came around rapidly this summer at Del Mar for trainer Bruce Headley, whose patient style means he starts few 2-year-olds.

Frisco Kid was the exception to the Headley operation. The colt was far more advanced than other Headley-trained 2-year-olds, his works were super, and the stable looked forward with anticipation to his scheduled debut Sept. 7 at Del Mar.

But then came a hitch in the plans. Frisco Kid got sick. It was minor, and just enough to necessitate a vet scratch. Summer was gone.

Frisco Kid recovered in only days, returned to the Headley base at Santa Anita, and picked up where he left off. His workouts at Santa Anita have been terrific. Jockey Alex Solis has been working him in the morning, and rides the colt for his debut.

Frisco Kid's sire, Alke, gets a lofty 17 percent debut winners according to Thoro-Graph. Frisco Kid is favorably drawn on Saturday in race 10.

Frisco Kid is 8-1 on the program, and a worthy alternative to the favorite.

So the answer to the original question is simple. If your ticket is 5-for-5 into the finale, you'd better use at least two - Get My Fix and Frisco Kid.
