CYPRESS, Calif. – The first day of the second and final week of the Los Alamitos September meeting begins Thursday with a carryover of $19,840 in a $2 pick six dominated by sprint races. The bet is conducted in the traditional format, with a carryover in the event of no tickets with six winners and a consolation for tickets with five winners. The pool of additional money bet on Thursday should easily exceed $100,000. The pick six covers the third through eighth races on a program that begins at 1 p.m. Pacific. The first two races in the sequence are claiming races for maidens at six furlongs. :: Bet the races with a $200 First Deposit Match and FREE Formulator PPs! Join DRF Bets. Seven of the eight 2-year-old fillies in the third race have started. Bizzy Gal was seventh in two maiden special weight races at five furlongs, and Golden Again was fourth at Del Mar earlier this month in her only start. Trained by Peter Miller, Bizzy Gal should benefit from the class relief. Bizzy Gal was beaten 3 3/4 lengths after a slow start in a turf race on Aug. 25. Golden Again broke slowly in a $50,000 claimer for maiden California-breds on Sept. 9 and was beaten 5 1/2 lengths. There are six runners in the fourth race, a $50,000 claimer for maidens. Encode, trained by Bob Baffert, will be favored from the inside post in his first start against claimers. Encode, purchased for $245,000 as a yearling, set the pace and faded to third in a maiden special weight race at a mile Sept. 2 at Del Mar. Juan Hernandez, the leading rider at Santa Anita and Del Mar this year, has the mount, his only ride Thursday. Baffert also starts the debut runner Purified, a colt by Lord Nelson bought for $385,000 as a 2-year-old in 2021. Purified has been based with Baffert’s Los Alamitos division. Raku Firing, second in a $50,000 claimer for maidens at six furlongs Sept. 1 at Del Mar, and Magnificent, a $250,000 yearling purchase who is winless in seven starts, will draw betting. Liam’s Dove and She’s Got a Way are part of a field of six in the fifth race, an allowance race/optional claimer for fillies and mares at 5 1/2 furlongs. Liam’s Dove, winner of the Del Mar Juvenile Fillies Turf at 34-1 in 2021, has not raced since January. She was seventh in her only start on dirt, in her debut in July 2021. She’s Got a Way has raced primarily on turf this year, but was third in the California Oaks on the synthetic track at Golden Gate Fields. She’s Got a Way, trained by Peter Eurton, could benefit if a quick pace develops. Baby Steps, Fulminate, and Violent Runner are fast enough to create a speed duel. Eurton said a quick pace would help new rider Ryan Curatolo settle She’s Got a Way in the opening quarter-mile. “You won’t have to fight her going short like you do when she’s going long,” Eurton said Sunday. The sixth race will be run at six furlongs for California-bred 2-year-old maiden fillies and has Miss Kaline and Big Celebration as principals in a field of six. Miss Kaline, the only mount of the day for Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith, was fifth in a similar race at a mile on turf Aug. 26 at Del Mar, closing from last to miss by three lengths. Big Celebration finished fourth after being bumped early and racing wide in her only start, a six-furlong race for statebred maiden fillies Sept. 3 at Del Mar. The lone two-turn race of the day is the seventh race, an allowance race/optional claimer for fillies and mares at a mile. Midnight Jamboree, scratched from Sunday’s $75,000 Dark Mirage Stakes, will be fitted with blinkers by trainer Bill Spawr in an effort to end a four-race losing streak. Trainer Doug O’Neill starts the capable Self Isolation, who won an allowance race for statebred fillies and mares here in July and was eighth in two allowance races on turf at Del Mar. There will be support for Warrior’s Moon, an allowance race winner at a mile against statebreds Sept. 1 at Del Mar. In the final race, Night Party will be favored to win a $50,000 claiming race for 2-year-old California-bred maiden fillies at six furlongs. Trained by Hector Palma, Night Party was second by a half-length on Sept. 9 at Del Mar after setting the pace to the final sixteenth. Night Party’s main rivals in a field of seven are The Reign Song, third on Aug. 19, and Hot Thoughts, who was last in a maiden special weight race for 2-year-old fillies on turf Aug. 25 after early traffic issues.
