Saturday’s Florida Derby card at Gulfstream features an all-stakes pick five, ending with the Florida Derby in Race 14. The wager, which has a 50-cent minimum, starts with the Sir Shackleton Stakes (approximate post, 4:09 p.m. Eastern). RACE 10 (Sir Shackleton Stakes): Going to take an immediate shot in this Florida Derby Day pick five with WEYBURN (No. 4). He makes his first start since September in the Sir Shackleton Stakes, but he sports some very nice works for his return. Trainer Brendan Walsh does very well off this type of break, and this colt has back Beyer Speed Figures that are certainly good enough to win this, if he can run to them. RACE 11 (Sanibel Island Stakes): HAIL TO (No. 7) has lots of upside in her seasonal debut, coming off a pair of races where she was against the race flow. She can spring the upset in the Sanibel Island, given a clean trip and some help up front. AMBITIEUSE (No. 8) regressed in her latest, but she's another who stands to improve if given a better pace scenario. MY PHILLY TWIRL (No. 9) is one of the expected pacesetters, but she doesn't necessarily need the lead to win and that tactical speed should give jockey Julien Leparoux some options. :: DRF's Florida Derby Day headquarters – Previews, past performances, picks, and more RACE 12 (Gulfstream Park Oaks): Looks like the Gulfstream Park Oaks is between GODDESS OF FIRE (No. 5) and Kathleen O., though the former is the one I'll stand alone with for the purposes of this ticket. Goddess of Fire seems to still be on the improve in terms of Beyers and may be set for her best try yet in her third start off the layoff. Kathleen O. is clearly the one to beat but perhaps vulnerable without another ideal pace scenario and in her second start off the short rest. RACE 13 (Appleton Stakes): NOBLE INDY (No. 1) has tactical speed and an inside draw, and that could prove the edge he needs in a very competitive Grade 3 Appleton Stakes. SCARLETT SKY (No. 2) doesn't have much positional speed, but he does have a good late kick. He is dangerous if he comes back running in his seasonal bow. SAFE CONDUCT (No. 6) has a chance to win this at a big price if he's able to sit off the pace and make one run, as that may well be his best game. ENGLISH BEE (No. 9) is widest of the nine entered, but he has the early foot to get position. His steady Beyers add to the appeal. :: For the first time ever, our premium past performances are free! RACE 14 (Florida Derby): CLASSIC CAUSEWAY (No. 2) is a good example of the "yin-yang" principle, the two complementary forces that make up all aspects and phenomena of life – and pace handicapping. He overcame the race flow when he wired a speed-filled field in the Sam F. Davis two back but benefited from a lack of early foot in the field when he coasted on the front end to win the Tampa Bay Derby. The pace scenario for this Florida Derby falls somewhere in the middle, but regardless he merits great respect as the main front-runner in the race, and given his inside draw. WHITE ABARRIO (No. 7) and SIMPLIFICATION (No. 3) were one-two in the Holy Bull, with the former winning easily after a stalking trip, but the latter returned to post an improved Beyer in the Fountain of Youth victory. Using all three on this main play but pressing with Classic Causeway on top in supporting tickets.
