VANCOUVER, British Columbia – The pick five at Hastings continues to grow, and going into Wednesday’s six-race card there is $530,894 carryover in the jackpot wager, the largest in North America.

There is a $30,927 carryover on the pick six, also a jackpot wager.

Post time for the first race is 3:45 p.m. Pacific.

Here is a quick look at the races that make up the five.

Race 2: Master Ewen seems logical in this bottom-level claimer for 3-year-olds and up. Trained by Rob Maybin, the 7-year-old Florida-bred gelding is coming off four straight runner-up finishes and owns the best last-race Beyer Speed Figure in the field. He has burned a lot of money while losing as the favorite in his last three races, though. His stablemate Trupon Online finished third in his last start in the same race Master Ewan exits and could be sitting on a peak performance in just his third start at the meet.

Race 3: Take Charge Gwen looks like the one to beat in this $6,250 conditioned claimer for fillies and mares. After winning back-to-back races going a mile and a sixteenth in $4,000 conditioned claimers, she just missed when she cut back to a sprint at this level Aug. 30. Adding to her appeal is that leading rider Antonio Reyes rides for leading trainer Barbara Heads. Reyes has won with 29 percent of his starters from Heads at this meet.

Stevie’s Song won’t mind the move from 1 1/16 miles back to a sprint, and could be tough to reel in if she breaks on top leaving from the inside post.

Race 4: It is tough to take a firm stand on any of the five horses entered. Simply Golden finished last in the same race Wednesday rival We Got It Covered won on Aug. 31. However, Simply Golden does her best running late and the pace was extremely slow. That will not be the case this time, and she could get up time at what should be a decent price. A strong case can be made for hitting the “all” button in what appears to be a scramble.

Race 5: Whiskey Talk is a possible single in this $16,000 optional maiden claimer where British Columbia-bred can run for $20,000. The Brian Kozak-owned and -trained son of Vronsky was running for a tag for the first time when he finished third in a $25,000 optional maiden claimer Aug. 24, and the 55 Beyer he received is the best last-race figure in the field.

Race 6: Walkinthewalk, Ombre’ Rose, and Timeless Shrug are all the horses needed in this bottom-level claimer for fillies and mares, non-winners of three.
