Pick five carryover may draw attention
RACE REPLAY IS NOT AVAILABLEAlthough the pick five at Turfway Park is not typically among the track’s most popular exotic wagers – with other bets regularly drawing higher handle – Thursday night could prove an exception. The wager is virtually assured of attracting more attention after being sweetened by a $5,082 carryover, which could partially offset its 22 percent takeout.
Turfway had a similar carryover this past Friday evening and handle was up sharply. Pick five tickets with winners at odds of 7-1, 7-2, 16-1, 8-5, and 5-2 returned $8,718.90 for the base wager of 50 cents.
The pick five on Thursday begins with the night’s opener, a $5,000 claiming race that goes at 6:15 p.m. Eastern. There, Impassable Canyon is the class of the race and a seemingly must-use in the pick five. His chief threat appears to be Kowboy Kody, who has hit the board in three straight races.
On the River, potentially ready for a peak effort in the third start of his current form cycle, is the in-form choice of the second race, having been third in his last two races. None of his eight rivals comes off better than fourth-place finishes in their most recent starts.
The third seems an opportune race for bettors to spread, with Florida invaders Little Havana and A Change of Heart joining Stellaire, an established Polytrack runner, in a maiden dash that also drew five first-time starters.
Those looking for a single may wish to consider Scat Lady in the fourth. Although just 2 for 30, she comes off two runner-up finishes against what seemed superior fields, and her main rival from a class perspective would appear to be Jasmene, who failed to beat a horse in her only start over Turfway’s Polytrack as a younger, inexperienced horse.
The pick five sequence concludes with the fifth, a contentious nickel claimer in which class-droppers Smarty Kitten and Forever Sure are well suited to the conditions.
